Our Monday Evening Chat/Film Viewing: "Charlie Chan's Murder Cruise"

“Truth like oil - will in time rise to surface.” – Charlie Chan

Charlie Chan and Number two son, Jimmy, “carry on” for the fallen Inspector Duff as the father and son duo search among the passengers of a round-the-world tour group for a murderer. Who is the killer, and will he (or she) be uncovered before the tour reached San Francisco and the killer leave Scott free?

Please join us in our Chat Room which is located at our Charlie Chan Family Home: www.charliechan.info, and use any of the “Chat Room” links to join us. We begin with arrivals and greetings at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, and we roll our personal copies of our film exactly 15 minutes later (8:15).

Even if you cannot access a copy of the above-noted film, please do join us anyway, as you will NOT be left out of our ongoing chat and festivities. Also, as is our custom, newcomers are offered the seat of honor at our humble table. Many of our films, such as this week’s entry, may be found available for viewing through such outlets as YouTube, etc. HAPPY NEWS…this week’s film, “Charlie Chan’s Murder Cruise,” IS available at YouTube! Here is the address:

FILM NOTES: The working titles of this film were “Charlie Chan's Cruise,” “ Charlie Chan's Oriental Cruise,” and “Chan's Murder Cruise.” According to materials contained at the UCLA Produced Scripts Collection at the UCLA Theater Arts Library, Robert Ellis and Helen Logan wrote the first treatment for this film, which was followed by a treatment and screenplay written by John Larkin. Their contribution to the final film has not been determined. In 1931, Fox filmed another version of Earl Derr Biggers' novel, “Charlie Chan Carries On.” The opening theme music for “Charlie Chan’s Murder Cruise” is a slower, much more somber, somewhat ominous version of the same music heard at the opening of “Charlie Chan in Honolulu.”

NEXT WEEK (June 16) we will be sharing “Phantom of Chinatown” starring Keye Luke as a young detective James Lee Wong. We will be celebrating our Number One Son’s birthday!

“THE RETURN OF CHARLIE CHAN” ON DVD: If you are interested in purchasing a clear, clean copy of “The Return of Charlie Chan” (Universal – 1971) a made-for-TV movie starring Ross Martin as Charlie Chan, I can recommend a version which you will find at: http://www.ioffer.com/i/the-return-of-charlie-chan-ross-martin-dvd-504052734. It lists for $14.99 which includes postage/handling. However, you may make a lower offer!

As always, please take care, have a pleasant Monday, and let’s all get together for another Chan-filled evening of fun and sharing as we watch “Charlie Chan’s Murder Cruise.”

Sincerely,
Rush Glick
