If you want to see Sidney Toler essentially do the Charlie Chan character in a Hopalong Cassidy western, see Law of The Pampas (Paramount, 1939). His Fernando character… particularly in the opening 5 or 10 minutes at a rodeo, is a dead-ringer for his Chan. Same facial expressions, style, etc
A real hoot.
This film overlaps the time when he was just starting as Chan (1938/39).

Sidney Toler can also be seen playing a cowboy in the western film "The Mysterious Rider", which co-stars Douglass Dumbrille, who also played in several Chan and Moto films.
