Our Monday Evening Chat/Film Viewing: "Docks of New Orleans"

"Patience - must harvest rice before can boil it.” – Charlie Chan
Our movie for this week’s Monday evening Chat and film viewing is “Docks of New Orleans,” staring Roland Winters as Charlie Chan with Victor Sen Young as Number Two Son…Tommy, and Mantan Moreland as Birmingham Brown. While in New Orleans on an extended vacation, an odd death brings Charlie Chan on the trail of a serial killer in a case of international intrigue and betrayal. We are also taking this occasion to celebrate the birthday of Roland Winters, whose birthday comes up later this week!

So, please join us in our Chat Room which is located at our Charlie Chan Family Home: www.charliechan.info, and use any of the “Chat Room” links to join us. We begin with arrivals and greetings at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, and we roll our personal copies of our film exactly 15 minutes later (8:15).
Even if you cannot access a copy of the above-noted film, please do join us anyway, as you will NOT be left out of our ongoing chat and festivities. Also, as is our custom, newcomers are offered the seat of honor at our humble table. Many of our films, such as this week’s entry, may be found available for viewing through such outlets as YouTube, etc. HAPPY NEWS…this week’s film, “Docks of New Orleans,” IS available, but in TWO parts. Part one can be found at: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xv36iz_chan-docks-of-new-orleans-part-1_shortfilms and part two at: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xv3716_chan-docks-of-new-orleans-part-2_shortfilms

FILM NOTES: The film's title card reads: 'Charlie Chan in "Docks of New Orleans"'. Despite the title, the docks are seem only briefly during the credit titles, and, during the opening scene of the film, they are suggested as the ship Presidente is being loaded through a cargo door with chemicals from the Lafontanne Chemical Company. Although not acknowledged in the onscreen credits, the film's story was derived from Monogram's 1938 picture, "Mr. Wong, Detective" (which will be our movie for NEXT WEEK). The working title for this movie was "Charlie Chan in New Orleans."

NEXT WEEK: (November 17) we will be sharing “Mr. Wong in Detective,” starring Boris Karloff as detective James Lee Wong in the film that provided the basis for this week’s Charlie Chan movie, “Docks of New Orleans.” As we watch this picture, we can compare it to the Chan version. We will also be celebrating Mr. Karloff’s birthday!

PLEASE NOTE: “THE RETURN OF CHARLIE CHAN” ON DVD: If you are interested in purchasing a clear, clean copy of “The Return of Charlie Chan” (Universal – 1971) a made-for-TV movie starring Ross Martin as Charlie Chan (which will be our final film stop on this year’s Chan Film Tour), I can recommend a version which you will find available at: http://www.ioffer.com/i/the-return-of-charlie-chan-ross-martin-dvd-504052734. It lists for $12.00 which includes postage/handling. However, you may make a lower offer! “The Return of Charlie Chan” is this year’s final film in our journey through Chandom!

As always, have a pleasant Monday, and let’s all get together for an evening of fun and sharing as we view “Docks of New Orleans.”

Sincerely,
Rush Glick
