Our movie for our Chat/Film Viewing for Monday: "Charlie Chan's Murder Cruise"

“Hours are happiest when hands are busiest.” (Charlie Chan – “Charlie Chan’s Murder Cruise”)

As out group excursion through the Charlie Chan film series continues, we have arrived at a crossing to the Mainland as we connect with “Charlie Chan’s Murder Cruise”. Dr. Suderman, who will be tour guide for this, the final leg of his group’s murder-marred trip around the world, assures us that we shall be safe from the clutches of whomever it may be that has so audaciously begun the task of picking off members of his tour group! Yes, we apparently have no quarrel with the killer…I hope...!

Please join us in our Chat Room which is located at our Charlie Chan Family Home: www.charliechan.info, and use any of the “Chat Room” links to join us. We begin with arrivals and greetings at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, and we roll our personal copies of our film exactly 15 minutes later (8:15).

FILM NOTES: “Charlie Chan’s Murder Cruise” is a loose adaptation of Earl Derr Biggers’ novel, “Charlie Chan Carries On” (1930). Previously, in 1931, Fox studios had filmed another version of Biggers' story which they titled “Charlie Chan Carries On” after the novel which was very closely scripted to the original. The working titles of “Charlie Chan’s Murder Cruise” were variously “Charlie Chan's Cruise,” “Charlie Chan's Oriental Cruise,” and “Chan's Murder Cruise.” According to materials contained at the UCLA Produced Scripts Collection at the UCLA Theater Arts Library, Robert Ellis and Helen Logan wrote the first treatment for this film, which was followed by a treatment and screenplay written by John Larkin. Their contribution to the final film has not been determined.

EVEN IF you cannot access a copy of the above-noted film, please do join us anyway, as you will NOT be left out of our ongoing chat and festivities. Also, as is our custom, new comers are offered the seat of honor at our humble table. Many of our films, such as this week’s entry, may be found available for viewing online through such outlets as YouTube, etc.

HAPPY NEWS…this week’s film, “Charlie Chan’s Murder Cruise,” IS available at YouTube at this address: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Af2De6_26RM

NEXT WEEK (June 15) we will be sharing “Phantom of Chinatown” with Keye Luke portraying a young Mr. Wong, as we celebrate our venerable Number One Son’s birthday!

Please have a happy and safe Monday, and let’s all get together for another Chan-filled evening of fun and sharing as we watch “Charlie Chan’s Murder Cruise.”

Sincerely,
Rush Glick
