Our Monday Evening Chat/Film Viewing for this week: "Mr. Wong, Detective"

“...this opera is going on tonight even if Frankenstein walks in!” (Mr. Arnold - “Charlie Chan at the Opera”)

Last week we shared “Docks of New Orleans” as we celebrated the birthday of Roland Winters. This week, we celebrate the birthday of another actor, Boris Karloff. The film we will be viewing together is “Mr. Wong, Detective,” which, coincidentally, provided the basic plot for last week’s Chan movie!

So, please join us in our Chat Room which is located at our Charlie Chan Family Home: www.charliechan.info, and use any of the “Chat Room” links to join us. We begin with arrivals and greetings at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, and we roll our personal copies of our film exactly 15 minutes later (8:15).

SUMMARY: When a chemical manufacturer is killed after asking detective James Wong to help him, Mr. Wong investigates this and two subsequent murders. In the process, he uncovers a international spy ring hoping to steal the formula for a poison gas being developed by the first victim's company.

FILM NOTES: “Mr. Wong, Detective” was produced by Monogram Pictures in 1938, a decade prior to the Charlie Chan version, “”Docks of New Orleans.” Boris Karloff appears in “Charlie Chan at the Opera,” and the Fox Film “Behind That Curtain,” filmed and released in 1929.

EVEN IF you cannot access a copy of the above-noted film, please do join us anyway, as you will NOT be left out of our ongoing chat and festivities. Also, as is our custom, new comers are offered the seat of honor at our humble table. Many of our films, such as this week’s entry, may be found available for viewing online through such outlets as YouTube, etc.

HAPPY NEWS…this week’s film, “Mr. Wong, Detective,” IS available at Youtube at this address: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vlJ-HraBRY

NEXT WEEK (Monday, November 30) our featured film will be “The Shanghai Chest.”

So, get ready for the party! See you there!

Sincerely,
Rush Glick
