Our Monday Evening Chat/Film Viewing: "ERAN TRECE" ("There Were Thirteen")

FROM CHARLIE CHAN: “Only very brave mouse make nest in cat's ear.” (“Charlie Chan Carries On” and “Eran Trece”)

Hello, and Happy Monday to you! As we continue our CHARLIE CHAN FILM TOUR 2016, we will now share “ERAN TRECE,” the Spanish language version of “CHARLIE CHAN CARRIES ON,” which is now a “lost” film, one of four such missing movies from the Fox Charlie Chan series. “Eran Trece,” which means “There Were Thirteen,” starred Manuel Arbó as Charlie Chan, was produced by Fox Films after the completion of the original version starring Warner Oland. The original script was used and was followed quite closely with a small number of minor changes, most notably the shipboard party scene featuring Max and Sadie Minchin which was much longer in the Spanish version and was certainly meant to showcase the talents of the noted Brazilian actor Raul Roulien. Don’t worry: subtitles are included!

OUR FILM: “Eran Trece” (1931). Runtime: 79 minutes.

SUMMARY: Inspector Duff, a Scotland Yard detective, and a friend of Charlie Chan, is pursuing a murderer who is a part of an around-the-world tour group. While his ship is docked in Honolulu, the detective is shot and critically wounded by the killer. With Duff in critical condition, Charlie Chan carries on the pursuit for his fallen friend.

TIME: We begin with arrivals and greetings at 8:00 EASTERN TIME. 15 minutes later (8:15), we begin rolling our personal copies of this week’s movie, “Behind That Curtain.”

LOCATION: Our Charlie Chan Family Chat Room, which is accessed at http://www.charliechan.info/id17.html.

IF YOU LACK A COPY OF OUR FILM: You will find a copy online at Youtube at this address: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iuMm5j77kw0

OF NOTE: The Chan family breakfast scene that we see in “The Black Camel” was originally scripted to be included in “Eran Trece,” but, as we see, was not, in the end, used. Also, in the scene at the dock with Charlie Chan, Mrs. Chan, and their Number One Son, we hear Mrs. Chan speaking to her husband in JAPANESE, and we hear her say “Sayonara” (“Good-bye” in Japanese) as Chan leaves them!

Well, with that, please have a wonderful Monday, and let’s get together tonight within the always friendly confines of our Chat Room as we continue our journey tthrough the entire Charlie Chan film series! As I said last week, we will also be taking some fun detours along the way and we will also be encountering upcoming “extras”! See you there!

Sincerely,
Rush Glick
