NPR Interview (2010): Yunte Huang vs Frank Chin (Hosted by Tom Ashbrook)

http://onpoint.wbur.org/2010/08/27/charlie-chan (total run time is 46:38 minutes)

Hello friends. I came across this NPR interview, and thought you might be interested in some sparing between a "proponent-and-opponent" of Charlie Chan.

Author/professor Yunte Huang is interviewed the first half (till around 11:50). Then they go to some Charlie Chan radio broadcasts, followed by more discussion with Huang, and at 18:35 they go live for listeners opinions.

At 25:50, Author/playwright Frank Chin comes on board and this is when sparks fly! Mr. Chin, starts out with "I have listened to the longest "Quack" (ref Huang). I hear a Chinese saying he has no other inspiration than a stereotype" Mr. Chin proclaims Charlie Chan is a racist character, invented by racists, for racists. He sites "General Guan Gong" (or Kwan Kong) as the best representation of a Chinese Hero that Americans should have knowledge of, as that's who the Chinese themselves relate to. And he is angry that Huang didn't write about him, too.

Then at 39:01, it's back to comments from listeners on the air, and at 42:00 back to Frank Chin & Yunte Huang. And "Yes" you can fast forward, although it's a pretty good interview overall.

Dear Lou,

Thank you for posting this information. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Huang and found him to be nothing less than a cordial gentleman. I thoroughly enjoyed reading his book, and, sadly, would not be surprised to hear of the diatribe leveled against his effort by the individual noted.

As of today, Yunte Huang's book, "Charlie Chan: The Untold Story of the Honorable Detective and His Rendezvous with American History" can still be found for sale across the Internet.

Thank you, again, Lou!

Sincerely,
Rush

Rush, you are very welcome. Also, I should have pointed out, some of the radio listeners call-in-opinions are very interesting. Especially one from an Italian-American.

In my humble opinion, Mr. Huang got the better of the discussion this go around.

TYSM.
