Our Monday Evening Chan-Chat: TWO episodes from "The New Adventures of Charlie Chan"

FROM CHARLIE CHAN: “Must always remember old saying: ‘Man who sees dawn sees beauty, but man who sees sunset survives the day.’"

Monday, and, for Yours Truly, summer is officially over, and school resumes! As I noted last week, time seems to fly by! This week we have two presentations as we watch two episodes from “The New Adventures of Charlie Chan,” the TV crime drama starring J. Carrol Naish as Charlie Chan, with James Hong as Number One Son, Barry! “The New Adventures of Charlie Chan” was a 39-episode series which was produced in 1957. Much of the series was shot on location in Great Britain and Europe. The first episode that we will be sharing “The Man with a Hundred Faces” (which IS available on YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbP0c8wvTKQ ). The second, “The Sweater,” is sadly NOT available online. However, those of us who have a copy on DVD will be able to share visually this adventure, while those without it can follow as we post the happenings as best we can!

Also, we will be departing slightly from our recent “extras” which have come from the 20th Century-Fox featurettes present on many of the discs from their DVD releases. This week, we will be sharing one of the cartoons from the 16-episode cartoon series from 1972 which featured KEYE LUKE as the voice of Charlie Chan, “The Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan.” The episode we will be sharing will be the very first one, “The Crown Jewel Caper,” which can be found online at: http://www.toon.is/the-amazing-chan-and-the-chan-clan-01-the-crown-jewel-caper-video_323e82e4e.html

OUR PRESENTATIONS: “The Man with a Hundred Faces” and “The Sweater” (both 1957); runtime: each 26 minutes…AND “”The Crown Jewel Caper” (1972); runtime: 20:00.

FILM SUMMARIES: “The Man with a Hundred Faces”: In Venice, Charlie Chan and Number One Son, Barry work to help a repentant thief, who is a master of disguise, who being forced to assist a ruthless criminal gang in carrying out their heists.

“The Sweater”: in Amsterdam, a famous clothing designer accidentally sells a commissioned sweater to the wrong person. When the owner of the sweater is found dead Charlie Chan takes on the case.

TIME: We begin with arrivals and greetings at 7:30 EASTERN TIME. Then, we share our special short “extras” which will be followed at exactly 8:15 when we roll the first of our features, “The Man with a Hundred Faces.”

LOCATION: Our Charlie Chan Family Chat Room, which is accessed at http://www.charliechan.info/id17.html.

IF YOU LACK A COPY OF OUR FILMS: Often our features can be found available online, half-happily, the first of our two features, “The Man with a Hundred Faces,” is presently available at YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbP0c8wvTKQ

AND, YET ANOTHER REMINDER OF SOME GOOD NEWS: I have tracked down a site on the Internet which features ALL 16 of the episodes from “The Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan” cartoon series, featuring Keye Luke as the voice of Charlie Chan! To access these episodes, please go to the following link which takes you to the first episode. From there you can click “Next” for Episode Two, and so on, or, if you scroll down, you may choose from any of the other episodes! Here is the link: http://www.toon.is/the-amazing-chan-and-the-chan-clan-01-the-crown-jewel-caper-video_323e82e4e.html Please enjoy, and, perhaps we can begin viewing these cartoons as a “bonus” each Monday before our featured film!

SO, have a happy, safe Monday, and let’s get together for another of a 16-year string of Chan-filled Monday evenings!

Sincerely,
Rush Glick
