Our Monday Evening (Labor Day) Chat/Film Viewing: "The Chinese Cobra"

FROM CHARLIE CHAN: “Police do not read Emily Post."

Happy Labor Day! This week we return to the road which passes through the entire Charlie Chan film series” as we watch and share “The Shanghai Cobra.” This film offers a moody, noiresque atmosphere as Charlie Chan, Number Three Son, Tommy, and assistant, Birmingham Brown track down the notorious “Cobra Keller,” on a dangerous trail that goes back nearly a decade earlier to the war-ravaged city of Shanghai.

Also, as our weekly “extra,” we will be sharing another of the cartoons from the 16-episode cartoon series from 1972 which featured KEYE LUKE as the voice of Charlie Chan, “The Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan.” The episode we will be sharing will be the second one, “To Catch a Pitcher,” which can be found online at: http://www.toon.is/the-amazing-chan-and-the-chan-clan-02-to-catch-a-pitcher-video_3447c8570.html

OUR PRESENTATIONS: “The Shanghai Cobra” (1945) …AND “To Catch a Pitcher” (1972); runtime: 20:00.

FILM SUMMARY: Charlie Chan is sent by the government to investigate several murders connected with a bank where a vital store of radium is kept. A number of employees of the bank have been killed by an injection of cobra venom. Chan remembers a similar case back in Shanghai in 1937, but the suspect in those murders, his face disfigured in an explosion, escaped. Number Tree Son, Tommy, and assistant Birmingham Brown help the detective as the trio places themselves in mortal danger as they track down the illusive "Cobra Killer."

TIME: We begin with arrivals and greetings at 7:30 EASTERN TIME. Then, we share our special short “extra” which will be followed at exactly 8:15 when we roll our feature for this Monday evening, “The Shanghai Cobra.”

LOCATION: Our Charlie Chan Family Chat Room, which is accessed at http://www.charliechan.info/id17.html.
