TONIGHT: "The Red Dragon"

Welcome to yet another Monday as we gather to share another entry in the Charlie Chan film series! Tonight we will be “screening” “The Red Dragon.” Charlie Chan and Number Three Son, Tommy, travel to Mexico City along with Birmingham’s cousin, Chattanooga and are faced with a perplexing murder involving a bizarre, unexplainable shooting, a cryptic message typed by the victim, a host of suspects, and the new, 95th element, whose discovery could lead to the development of a super bomb.

Also, as our weekly “extra,” we will be sharing another of the cartoons from the 16-episode cartoon series from 1972 which featured KEYE LUKE as the voice of Charlie Chan, “The Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan.” The episode we will be sharing will be the third one, “Will the Real Charlie Chan Please Stand Up?” which can be found online at: http://www.toon.is/the-amazing-chan-and-the-chan-clan-03-will-the-real-charlie-chan-please-stand-up-video_d2e78314c.html

OUR PRESENTATIONS: “The Red Dragon” (1945; 64 minutes)) …AND “”Will the Real Charlie Chan Please Stand Up” (1972); runtime: 20:00 (originally aired: September 23, 1972).

FILM SUMMARY: In Mexico City, an attempt is made to steal the papers of the mysterious Alfred Wyans. His secretary, Walter Dorn, is working undercover for the U.S. government. At the U.S. embassy, he begs that they send for Charlie Chan. The next day, Dorn is mysteriously shot during a luncheon party at Wyans' home. Chan arrives in Mexico City, accompanied by Number Three Son Tommy and his chauffeur and assistant Chattanooga Brown. Chan reveals that Wyans' papers relate to the discovery of a new, 95th element which could be used to make a bomb much more powerful than an atomic bomb. The detective suspects one of the party guests, setting out to find which one is responsible for Dorn's death.

FILM NOTES: The film's working title was “Charlie Chan in Mexico.”
