We thought that this hotly-debated topic would benefit from a place on the web - a place to hear all sides of this important and quickly-expanding aspect of food provision.
I am in the process of switching careers from IT to organic chicken and/or fish farming. Could someone please tell me how best to go about this? I have no formal training in farming except motivation. Any advice will be appreciated.
I think motivation is really important for this type of endeavor because its A LOT of hard work to start a good farm like one you are interested in. But great, congratulations!!!!
I am not a farmer, but a grad student in Agriculture and Environmental policy and I would suggest that you get a job on a farm for a little while to learn the ins and outs. Theres a whole international network of organic farms that allow people to work part-time if you dont want to work on one for a long time. (its called WOOF).
Also, for starting up, you should definatly contact local university or cooperative extension for help starting, getting grants, etc. (students are a great resource). and of course talk with other farmers in your area as much as you can before you start.
