Why Faye Grant & "V" matter

Greetings everyone! I've been to this site before and let me say it's even more fabulous now that there is a message board. Congrats to Tammie for creating such a welcoming place for all Faye Grant fans, scattered as we are.

I appreciated Faye Grant early on. She had a look that was immediately arresting. Whether it's the wry twist in her lips, or an appealing angle in her brow, or perhaps a certain poignancy in her eyes, she has intangible qualities that enhance her look. I guess what I'm saying is her face has character, which is more than I can say for many of the currently fashionable and bland Hollywood beauties out there.

Beyond aesthetics, Faye also happens to be a fine actress who imparts grace and sensitivity to her roles, a subtle skill that tends to elude the grasp of most models-turned-actors who are too busy mugging the camera to show any genuine feeling. Faye has the intelligence and personality to make us care about her characters.

The miniseries V (was 1983 that long ago??) had a big impact on me, impressionable teen that I was then. V was unsettling, thought-provoking TV sci-fi that remains unique in its way. Ken Johnson's story was tightly focused and told with a seriousness of purpose uncommon for network television. V strove to avoid any Flash Gordon-type cheesiness in its depiction of the Visitors. Instead, these extra-terrestrial conquerors were smooth, savvy operators who knew the right emotional buttons to push in order to control the human race. These aliens may have been "evil" but they were also simply exploiting basic human weaknesses. Greed, ambition, gullibility, malice, distrust...we have within ourselves the seeds for our own downfall as a species. The Visitors merely encouraged those seeds to grow.

Not that I'm apologizing for the Visitors. That they would coldly subjugate another intelligent lifeform in the universe (namely us!) for their own needs (dinner!) shows that they're BAAAD. Perhaps the question is: what would we have done in their place? How much better (or not) are we than them?

Whatever the case, V made you think--which is possibly the highest compliment I can give to any television program. Whew! I'm done.

Hope this forum attracts more folks to this corner of cyberspace. Bye for now and keep watching the skies!
