In his book The Problem of Pain, CS Lewis includes the following quotation by George Macdonald at the beginning of the book:

The Son of God suffered unto death, not that men might not suffer, but that their sufferings might be like His."

I pray that the suffering of this illness would bring us all closer and closer to God, that through it we may all come to know God more...and as a result love Him more.

a professor i had in college talked about how everyone in life will suffer - but if you're a Christian, you know that the pain has a purpose and it won't be in vain. God will use all the things in life, the good and the bad for his purposes... to draw us closer to Him, to draw others close to Him...
