Route was reversed back to more fells and less tarmac, which seemed to have pleased most, definitely a proper challenge.
Hopefully we'll see more striders at these events, where accurate measurement and pacing are things of the past.

It was 20 degrees by the end and dry. The course is in woods, mostly, and very well marked (arrows painted on the floor and red&white tape plus lots of marshals). There was an oddity in the finish funnel were, although I crossed the finished line 9th, the race appears to be to get to the marshal scanning the bar codes first. Phil Riding would do well in this format I think. I prefer chip timing, or more polite runners.

It turned out a nice day for a run on the Clwydian hills. I was well beaten into 2nd; the guy breezed passed me on the first climb and extended his lead throughout, until he took a wrong turn on the last road and I was able to close in (to within 2min22sec). Tracy pipped Charlotte by a small margin, although Cheryl was even closer to Lucie. Simone and Bailey were guaranteed full points assuming they could finish the 20 miles (which has a lot of climbing). I had dropped to the 10 miler to race Simone, but he was keen to get, "His easy 50 points," in the Penny Lane Off-Road Championship. At least he had to suffer a bit more this year for those 50 points, although he says he enjoyed it. It was sadly just the same two PLS males as 2017. On a positive, numbers had increased greatly on the female participation side from zero in 2017 to seven in 2018.

As first timer the intention was always to just finish it, but I felt ok all the way so I tried to keep a rapid stride, also latest changes in race strategy meant I was able to prevent cramps, my worst fear at these events...

It was ideal running weather in Yorkshire with a cool light breeze and cloud, plus a sub 10 degrees temperature. Sadly all the rain the last few months had made the ground very wet. I foolishly/bravely took the early lead which I interchanged with the eventual winner up to 25 miles. Sadly after this I got cramp I could not shake off and resorted to shuffling to the finish. Sadly the flat ground and downhills exposed my weakness and the 3rd placed runner passed me, making me 3rd. I was no longer running so also had a coat on to save energy. By the end I was wearing mitts aswell.
