Despite missing the well marked route (again) and taking 2-3 with him at half way, Eccles managed a stellar performance, holding on to Jez Brown's attacks...WELL DONE!
Warm night with plenty of shades, most of it is ran under ondulated woods, with three very short but sharp climbs, which require the use of all body's limbs.
Finishes outside the miners arms pub HQ, meaning it's almost compulsory to get a pint and support the local business.
One for next year's ORC calendar no doubts, for one simple reason...most numerous club get a sack of potatoes!

After passing my own fitness test on Wednesday at The Beast I entered Ennerdale. I also arranged a lift with a friend so I could not back out easily. As almost everybody who's met me recently knows, I have a leg injury (suspected IT band) so I followed some advice and started slowly. On the hill climb I quickly moved through the field. This worked till Pillar (which is about 15 miles), then my inability to run fast downhill saw me passed by Buckley nemesis Jez Brown, a girl and then a 60 year old man (along with a few other people in between).

It was warm and humid, but water stations every 3 miles ensured no-one suffered any dehydration.
It's a well marked and well established trail race, the paths are all bridle ways and narrow only in few places, meaning the horses can pass the runners without any trouble.
The winner, a horse nonetheless, pipped the first solo runner by a mere 23 secs! They say horses don't perform well in the heat and are rubbish downhill...there obviously never going to be a man v horse fell race, or the man will always win!
PLS came out to in force this time, with the girls' team getting pipped to third place overall only by a team of marines, which makes you wonder if these type of events should be left purely to amateurs.
It's staggering how this event keeps delivering, despite its longevity, 39 years in the making.
I will strongly consider re-introduce it to the off road champs next year for its 40th, maybe as a one off...or maybe not :wink:

Hotfoot is deemed as “the slowest 5k in the country”, although it actually measures 6.1km.
The conditions were far from perfect, a strong wind and sideway hail stoning developed quickly before the start and worsened during the race, added to the high bracken, made the steep descents very tricky indeed.
A couple of bad line choices meant I slipped few places back before half way, never to be recovered again. Legs were up to no good after MvH at the weekend and THE infamous steep and narrow Famau's gully one km before the finish didn't help the cause. 88 ran.
Highly reccomended for fell running newbies, add it to your bucket list.

Quite bleak weather. Very strange running at 11 pm in ‘daylight’ (there were dark storm clouds, so it was actually quite dark). Still, definitely would recommend for the full marathon that some of my friends did! The course for the half lacked inspiration.

Hot night with plenty of shade and midges, the latter made excellent post race recovery food.
The hills are steeper than I remembered, but Lawrence and Rob seemed not to have noticed much.
Another awesome PLS representation, despite the current rail disruption prevented many to participate, a real shame.
