I had 380 points and decided to make the run for the finish cautiously early. My map reading skills conspired against me and I made a mess of finding the last CP on my planned route by accidentally transposing my position by moving my finger on the map. Even after relocation myself I made a hash of getting to the CP and suddenly the pressure was on to finish under 3 hours. It quickly became apparent it was not possible. Still I tried to cut the corner and inadvertently made my route in even longer; finishing just under 3h07 and losing 20 points. Good fun at least. There are more of these events in the spring/summer.

Probably 30 miles. It felt like 50 running/walking in the bog and heather in the dark

Dark Mountains was a mountain marathon, which is normally over two days, rolled into one night. I say 'was' as this was apparently the last one. The organiser has retired Dark Mountains to focus on delivering Dragon's Back and Cape Wrath ultra in the same year from 2021. I for one will miss Dark Mountains. Probably the hardest race I've done, demonstrated by two DNFs, one DQ due to dibbing wrong CP and finally one finish. Hopefully I'm not DQ'd tomorrow for going out of bounds.
