Finally I managed to get into this race. It's one of those races that fills in hour or two. I entered the waiting list, but didn't expect to get the invite. Oddly they had a surplus of places this year, so I convinced Dave to enter against the advice of certain other runners. I think he enjoyed it. He now knows 'slurry lane', 'potato field' and 'the lake' at least. He can also say he's done an ultra that crosses 3 major motorways. My race went a bit wrong. Perhaps lack of recent lactic conditioning lead to a death march/jog to the finish. I blame my heavy shoes, but maybe in the long run this mistake will prove to be excellent strength training.

Alton Towers Half Marathon. 14/11/21

Syd O - 1.37.03. Inaugural race I believe, very well organised, good medal and a good quality running top. Undulating course, but good fun. Race entry includes park rides and no queues . Great day, recommend for next year.

I did this race as an alternative to the classic Tour of Pendle as it is one I've been meaning to try for years. It is only a B class fell race in that there's not too much climbing per mile. There was talk of a waist deep bog section that required negotiating. It was sounding like something from Mordor, but turned out to be barely ankle deep, if that. It was a dry day and visibility was good. Maybe if the mist was down it would be much more challenging. The race then goes on a fast Roman road and back along an optional flagged route back to the start. Some local runners had their own lines to potentially save time here. I had hoped for a mug as it was pictured on the Facebook page, but the mugs were reserved for category winners and, oddly, 'local' runners. I did get a bottle of beer and post race soup.

The village of barley was very busy due the race coinciding with the FRA 50th anniversary, some questionable parking was undertaken by myself after driving round the village a few times looking for a space.

The weather started off fairly pleasant for the time of the year, and I was only hampered by a stone in my shoe which didn’t go away despite my positive thinking. Eventually I had to stop and take my shoe off which cost me very little time but was slightly annoying.

The hills however did cost me a lot of time, one particular decent Geronimo is very steep and my fellow competitors mainly chose not to follow the path and barrel straight down the side, which I am still trying to master the technique.

The race takes you to what must be all of the steep parts of Pendle hill, and I last saw Simo disappearing up one of these hills referred to locally as the Big Dipper towards the Cairn at CP8 in his still newly luminous Bowland vest.

The final climb takes you back up to the top of Pendle hill Big End and by this time clag had closed in a bit and I couldn’t see the wall line to aim at which leads to the final CP11, so I just had to follow someone and hope they were going the right way.

Runners got a t shirt, no beer or no mug, but then who would run a race just for a mug anyway.

A very cold day (wind was particularly biting) but conditions underfoot were some of the best seen in years. As ever, one of the few chances where we get to rub shoulders with the 'elites'.

It is a fast course after all. I wasn't sure if the advertising was true after being mislead by a few other 'flat' courses like Garstang. Wilmslow was very cold though, especially in the first three miles downhill, but it didn't seem to slow times like hot weather can.
