I only won by 3 seconds! The race has a reputation for being very rough and difficult to navigate in bad conditions. I got the bad conditions although the navigation challenge was greatly exaggerated. I had taken the precaution of pre marking my map with the bearings. The BBC were there filming; I am not sure why as it is a small fell race with a fierce reputation. Only about 40 people ran even though it costs £5 to enter! There were cakes and tea at the finish for a small contribution to mountain rescue. All of the race entry apparently goes to mountain rescue too. They did supply the summit marshals in what turned out to be grim conditions.

An excellent evening for a fell race. Unfortunately the good weather had helped the bracken grow very high and dense. The ground was rock hard meaning wearing trail shoes, like I did, worked out well. Dipple did complain at the end that the ground was too hard. I complained about the bracken, but I suppose it all gave the race character. Michael had a mare on the final descent over heather (well Simo passed him)

It was an overcast, but warm night. The course had been well gardened with a machete, so was setup for a PB. I thought I had beaten the field on the climb to the mast, but unfortunately I became quite aware of company on the long descent, and then downward traverse, to the finish. It was around here I broke my hand, but that was a few months ago. I managed to stay upright and pull away on the climb to the finish and victory. The prize was a signed, hand drawn, picture by the race organiser Charles Ashley. Charles had gone for an odd selection of prizes this year, replacing the traditional wine with garden shears, sunglasses, sweets and a towel to name a few.
