A classic AL fell race. I had suggested this was taken out of the ORC as it was too hard and no one would want to do then subsequently signed up again. Entries are made via a cheque in the post, on the day entries are allowed but at double the cost. Lawrence was a late entrant after deeming the start list as soft and being assured of a top 20 finish and then finishing 21st. Unfortunately, several other accomplished fell runners must have had the same idea making the start list more competitive than at first glance. The race was quickly rebadged as a training run not to make the journey seem like a total waste of time. I fared much better this year than last owing to the gruelling Helsby 2 peaks training sessions, and being fuelled by Welsh Dragon’s Back winner approved Voom bars.

The race starts in the village of Barley and makes it way up to the top of Pendle hill, and then it’s a relative fast few miles, winding towards the Nick of Pendle before a climb up the top of Geronimo. Geronimo is a very steep descent, there’s no easy way down and staying up right is an achievement. This is where I developed what can only be called a sense of Bowlandanoia, looking over my shoulder for the Italian Stallion in the Orange and Green vest. There were several false sightings, and then few confirmed sightings, with each one getting closer and closer.

The real race starts around 10 miles at the bottom of Mearley Moor which is the start of a sequence of 3 big climbs and accompanying descents. The next climb is referred to locally as the Big Dipper, and it was at the top of this that I started to develop fairly bad cramps. I am not sure if this was due the high caffeine content of the Voom bars or the nature of the race, however I was not the only one suffering cramps at this stage. After what I thought were racing ending cramps had subsided I made it down the last decent before the last climb back up to Pendle hill.

Suffering cramps again but in a different leg I hobbled down from Pendle hill to Ogden Clough via a trod which is easy to miss but on a clear day like we had pretty visible. The final section back to Barley is fairly flat and mainly on tarmac, unkindly the very final section from Lower Ogden Reservoir is a steep decent and on the verge of cramping everywhere I made it across the finish line, with only seconds between myself and our friend at BFR.
