The Druid Fell Race - ORC race
Just two of us there last night, myself and Steve Dipple. Many PLS runners were doing Tony Barnes 5miler on the same evening. I have not run this race before but will definitely be coming back as the laidback atmosphere, £4 EOD and beautiful fells were just the perfect setting for a summer off road race. The race starts with a steep 2-3 mile section mainly on grass and some gravel, followed by sharp steps to the top of Moel Fenlli. After looping the hill we were heading down a technical descent for 2 miles, where I lost my lead to unstoppable ex strider Kate McFarlane who in the end won the race. Steve had a strong run on the fells and improved on his last year's time with a speedy sprint finish. After some initial mix us with ladies results, I got 3rd lady and wine. Great to see another ex strider Simone Capponi there as well.

I started steady hoping to build into the race. I passed Dr Emmett Brown, not realising he'd soon become my nemesis. Before the first CP I stopped gaining on the runners ahead. It was around then that Dr Emmett Brown came past. I took a gel hoping that might save the race, but alas I couldn't close the gap on Dr Brown. He just kept running up the hill. He wasn't bad on descents either, but I was able to catch, and overtake him, on the final climb to Kentmere pike. It was then all downhill. Dr Emmett Brown was not done and passed me. Fortunately I was able to pass him on the really steep ground and hold on to finish under 2 hours. I think there's room for improvement. Just water at the finish at this race. Cakes are available at a cost.
As an addition, the weather was actually fine aside from the odd horizontal hail shower.

There was a lower turn out this year (55) than the previous year which caused some slight concern at the start as last year the course was sparsely marked. The organiser assured us it had been marked better this year. Soon after we started we were passed by Joel Gomez running at break neck speed the opposite way. It seems Joel had missed the started, he passed me fairly early on and still ended up finishing 4th.
The weather was perfect for an evening run around Moel Famau, clear blue skies and a light breeze. The course was mix of fern yomping, the Offa’s **** and steep decent off Moel Dywyll. I managed to find the right line down this year which saved me a lot of time on the decent.
The pub said they weren’t doing food, but after some Terry charm we were offered 4 curries.
Lenka finished 3rd Woman and picked up a head torch for her efforts.

It was a wet race and there had been a lot of rain in the days leading up to the race prompting much discussion over what footwear to use. On the drive up there we were diverted by google off the m57 maybe because of the rain through the country lanes to Parbold, some of the fields had small lakes in them which gave a good indication the fields in race would be boggy, I and some of the other went with maximum grip which turned out to be a good choice as the route was like a like a cross country course in parts.
We didn't get food in the pub as you had to pre order and we hadn't, a lesson learnt for next time. The next race is at the earlier time of 7pm.
