Sandstone Trail ORC races
The A Race is 27.5km (17.5 miles) with 655m climb starting from Duckington and is ideal for the more experienced runners. The B Race s 17.0km (11.5 miles) with 288m of climb starting from Beeston and is better suited for those wanting to try their hand at trail running. Runners have the option of buying a place on a bus to their chosen start line from Delamere Forest when entering the race. Both races finish in Delamere Forest where the prizes are presented
This year the PLS numbers were slightly up from 2022, with quite a few PLS runners entering for the first time.
It was a challenging day in a hot weather and a pretty badly overgrown course. The nettle rash after the race was painful. Few of us also encountered a swarm of angry hornets, which caused Sarah taking a one mile detour for safety reasons. Colin and I took a detour just for the sake of it - also called got lost on a B race. Well done to all especially the A runners it must have been a brutal run in that heat. No bull seen on course this year.

Back from the Alps I was hoping my time at altitude would elevate me to a higher level. Alas I finished 20 minutes behind the winner who set a new course record for this relatively new fell race; it was its 4th year, but only third with current course. It was a day for local knowledge as the cloud was down meaning some navigation was required. The paths and trods were slightly muddy, but in a nice way. I had fallen to 4th, but an obvious short cut saw me regain third place on the last climb. I did ask the other runner why they didn't cut the corner and it seemed they just feared getting stuck in the bracken. Tea, cake and sandwiches at the finish; and all for £9.

Although I dropped a few places this year I got a 10 minute+ PB ๐. Next year the race will be in the British Championship, so I'd be lucky to get in the top 50; maybe I'll marshal instead. The weather was good with clear visibility. This did mean the summit of Snowdon was crowded. I went off the summit via the railway line and could hear the train getting ready to come run me over. Soup, tea and bread rolls at the finish. Not sure how they put this race on for £10!

There was a strong South Westerly wind which resulted in the first stretch along the beach being straight into a head wind. This meant to run home was wind assisted however I don't think this made up for the time lost on the way out.

The Ceiriog Canter made a welcome return to the Penny Lane off road championship. The weather was less welcome with heavy rain and low cloud. The water was running off the hill down the footpath we ran up to start. The rain did conveniently stop as the race started, but many runners still opted to wear a coat. I led early on, but was soon passed and left for dead. Post race there was a raffle in the community hall. They also had homemade cakes and drinks at a reasonable price. Hopefully next year the weather is more inviting (and more Penny Lane Striders are inclined to turn up)
