Rotherham is probably best known these days for its grooming gangs, but it does also have a 50 mile race that has been going for 40 years. Before the ultra race boom in the UK the Round Rotherham race was a Western States 100 and UTMB qualifier. It is one of the best cost per mile races in the UK at £29. It is staggered starts using electronic timing. I started just after 7am. Some people had started before 4am! It is a race that allows people of all speeds to try the 50 mile distance. There are 7 check points on the route, plus refreshments at start/finish centre.

A relatively new race; this was only the 7th running. I made a late entry as only £8 for 15 miles of hilly fun, including some parts on a private estate. The location is the Hare and Hounds country pub just outside Hebden Bridge (Ed Sheeran's home town). I started running at the front and found I could keep up. I was plotting to just hang on to the top two and wait until the last mile to strike. Alas I didn't hang on that long and soon had to resort to actually reading the map to navigate my way around the course. I made a few minor errors, but managed to keep 3rd place. A pint in the Yorkshire pub post race was a very un Yorkshire price of £6.50; I thought I was back in Chamonix for a second. Surely they must have a more accommodating price for locals.

The Fell champs were held near the village of Braithwaite this year in the Lake District not too far from Keswick. Storm Babet had been threatening throughout the week but the Lake District seemed to be one of the few places in the country that would not see much of its effects. The ever-changing forecast showed on the morning that it would be dry for the day, however the clag over various peaks on the drive up gave an ominous sign.

Izzi stepped into the team at late notice due to an injury and did a great job on leg 1 which took in a lot of elevation and the Wainwright Barrow.

Sean and Lawrence were on leg 2 which was the hardest leg being 8.20 miles with 3400ft of elevation gain and taking in 5 Wainwrights; Crag Hill, Sail, Scar Crag, Outerside and Barrow.

Leg 3 was the navigation leg which me and Alice were on, the maps weren’t given out until we had ran up the first hill. We nearly immediately went wrong by going up a valley, but the blue flags on start of the course were a strong indicator which way we should go. The visibility was good so it was quite clear to see which way runners were headed making the navigation minimal. Olga Fells was positioned after checkpoint 1 making one of her famous fell running videos. The checkpoints were mainly ruins and streams which suited local knowledge. The route was fairly clear for the majority of the race but after CP6 the runners headed towards Barrow and traversed a really un runnable steep, dense heather covered hill side. Suspiciously the lead runners had all double backed on themselves after CP6 and ran another route around this section.

Sarah was on the last leg which was similar to leg one but slightly extended taking in 2 Wainwrights. By this time the start and finish was well worn in making the steep decent into the finish even more treacherous.

The food provided was a pulled pork roll or vegan alternative. Lawrence managed to get 2 as I temporarily lost my meal voucher ticket in the queue but manged to get by without it, only for Lawrence to later make use of it later.
