I was hoping to complete my set of beer mugs having finished 2nd and 3rd in the last two years. Alas it was not to be. After last year's successful pacing I tried to replicate the performance and failed. Perhaps the muddy fields, of which there are quite a few, played their part. A lot of the course is actually on well drained trail and tarmac...but the fields can be a few hundred metres off ankle deep mud. The race is popular still as it is put on by Lymm for runners/joggers/fast walkers. They also have a pairs relay option as well as quad relay. Nice meal, and hot drinks, post run rounds the day off nicely 👍

The weather turned out nice for the race with mostly dry weather and little wind. The wind and rain did come in the second half, but wasn't particularly heavy or strong. I still managed to take a mini detour on the final descent, but it only cost me a few minutes. Sadly this was enough for Phil Riding jnr to nip ahead of me. George came closest to winning the hundred pound voucher for finishing 100th, but unfortunately missed out. Michael followed home, a few minutes ahead of the Beast of Bowland (formally known as Simo whe he ran for PLS). Last, but not least, was Julien and Lenka. I thought Julien let Lenka finish first. Either way, they have the same time. No free soup at this one, but there is a T-shirt for the £10 entry fee. It's provided before the race. This year was teal. I wonder what colour they'll use for their 40th anniversary race.

All 4 relay legs follow the same flagged route. It is not unheard of for one runner to run all four legs. This year the winning team was helped to victory by their top runner doubling up and running two legs back to back. My team, made up of a Chorlton runner, me (Penny Lane), Dark Peak and unattached (it was meant to be Dave Riding, younger brother of Phil Riding, who is a member of Achille Ratti; but he was replaced by Dave Ryder of no fixed club). The relay has a good setup with parking close to the park where the race starts. There's a local café and Pete Blands sports shop van was there for the day. Full results at UKresults.net

The weather was mainly dry, but very windy and slippy underfoot. This race is usually the last weekend in October but was moved to the 12th Nov for some reason so there was minutes silence for remembrance day. I believe next year the race will be back to the last weekend in October which should clash with xc. There was free butter nut squash soup in the village hall for all runners. The Beast of Bowland also ran.
