The Beast of Bowland (Simo) broke his arm skiing last Christmas and advised he had a place in the Saddleworth 10. I investigated what it was and discovered it was actually a marathon of sorts. I took the place and got done reason assumed it was on Sunday; until last Thursday; and was planning to do Halewood 5k as a sharpener. Conditions were not quite ideal today. There was wet snow with mud underneath. Streams were high meaning we had to take the diversion over boulders to get to Check Point 1 (CP1).
Before CP3 I smashed my shin into a paving slab. Fortunately the cold numbed any initial pain. The section over Black Hill was very white! After surviving that section it was just a short section of the Pennine Way, followed by another snow mudfest, to reach lovely tarmac . It did then contour on a nice path to reach more tarmac and trail that led to finish at a Rugby club. This meant we had hot showers and a bar along with hot food. Very good value considering.

The weather conspired to be nice in the Lancashire area, they were accepting entries on the day, and I still had a voucher from 2023, so I headed up to do the 20 miler. There was also a 10k at the same time, but nobody from Penny Lane seemingly took that option. The course is ok with a few out and backs, so get to see people. My legs fell off so I did get to see a few more people as they overtook me, but all good fun; even when the last two miles were into a stiff breeze. The prizes at the finish were strange! They had a T-shirt and Trophy which I declined. In hindsight the T-shirt was potentially useful as long sleeved as well as being high viz yellow. I took the Wagon Wheel of course along with water, a banana and another voucher.

This year I was the only Penny Lane representative. The weather looked likely to be good, but before long the drizzle started. On the ridge it turned into driving wind and rain. I pushed on in a small pack of two, hoping to gain an edge on a climb or descent. On the last climb up Moel y Gamelin I managed to get a small lead on the man who was walking uphill faster than my running at times! The man was former English fell champion, from the Isle of Man, Lloyd Taggart. I did slip on the final descent on some rocks and graze my palm to keep things interesting. On the final road section a red car did seemingly try to run me over. I thought it was maybe a friend of Lloyd, but they gave him the same treatment. Cakes, tea and coffee post race at the Conquering Hero community centre.
