I heard of this race off my Tor des Geants success in 2022. In 2023 the race was late September, but for 2024 they moved it to May. I decided to give it a go. The stand out problems/opportunities were 'The Heat' (it is high 20s/low 30s even in May) and 'The height' (it has three single climbs over 1,500m and one even over 2,000m).

The race started at 8pm with a mostly downhill 25km. The wind was strong and refreshing. An unforeseen issue was the wild dogs. Fortunately I was able to avoid being attacked. I actually gained a friendly dog for a climb who then bizarrely came down the other side of the mountain having done an 1,800m ascent with ease. The same could not be said for me. The heat+climb was tough. Fortunately, water is readily available from fountains in villages and mountain springs.

I was drinking electrolytes early on to try and keep stomach in check. I had the fabled coca cola also, and the odd Maurten gel and Ready energy drink plus potatoes. The eventual winner, from Bulgaria, commented on my love of potatoes after seeing me eat them a few times. He took the lead on the third stage and never let it go. After halfway I stopped. I was very close to retiring as my right little toe was very sore and I had blisters. A meal followed by 2 hour sleep changed my outlook. I enjoyed the following 2,100m climb 😁.

Through the third day I reduced the 6 hour deficit to two hours. I wasn't relentlessly chasing it as I took my time to ensure I ate and drank well at the check points every 20-25miles. The last two legs were strange however! Firstly we went into a field and the markers were set to seemingly cause confusion. Sleep deprivation probably played a part, but it seemed like a game. The final stage I was expecting a wide dirt road. Instead the path was a few feet wide over a large drop, when there was a path at all! I became convinced that it was a game that the Greek runners had a 10km dirt road to the finish while I did 30km. They were all very tight lipped on the scheme which got me thinking 🤔 that perhaps I was doing the right route. I didn't make that deduction until after I'd finished and slept a little
