I tried this race last year, but did not finish as the hot weather made it unpleasant. I had no such problems this year as the conditions were near perfect temperature wise. Sadly underfoot it was like cross country in places. They said they had changed the course to avoid the worst of the mud, yet it often seemed to intentionally go through the worst of the mud!

I realised I'd virtual finished last year after taking a long time to reach the same point around 16-20km from the end. I was surprised to find the check point I retired at had gone. The course had been lengthened I think as I'd swear it was only 84km last year. This year I peaked at 70th position before calf cramps slowed me down. By the end my quads were crying also.

The race is incredibly busy. Looking at the results, over 2,000 people finished. This does not tell the full story as they also have relay runners in a similar vein to 'Man Vs Horse' race meaning people can suddenly appear with fresh legs and overtake at any time. There are three check points on the route with food, water, water melon, gels etc. They also have additional water stops that prove very useful even when it's cloudy.

After having done the race a number of times, last night I managed to miss a turn near the end and therefore finish from the wrong side! Terry made the same mistake but backtracked back up the hill and re-joined the race route where he had left it. I pondered that, but it was part of the fun to go the wrong way. I was comfortably in 4th and unlikely to have caught 3rd anyway. On the potato front we did not feature in the top 3 most represented clubs. I have a dream that one day we can win the sack of potatoes, mainly just because it is such a strange prize.

It was a nice summer evening for a trail race. The flies were out, but not truly terrible. There was a good Penny Lane turn out for an Off Road Championship race, with me taking the 50 points in a tight race with the two Seans. Liz was the first woman home from Penny Lane (not counting Kate Macfarlane who had a PLS vest but has not renewed her subs for this season yet) and also won first vet overall. Just water at the finish, plus a Mars bar like at Parbold Hill race.

Tony started early (was meant to be 20 minutes, but it seems there must have been a delay), so I got to overtake him in my distant chase of first place! The first place runner went on to beat the course record in an impressive 1:36:29. I managed to navigate successfully through the cloud without cheating (using a GPS watch), but came unstuck at some rather stubborn bracken just before the finish. I pondered ploughing through it, but eventually opted to go around. As I reached the gate I saw a runner coming through the bracken. I quickly went through the gate and closed it firmly behind me. Sadly I did not close it firmly enough and the runner came careering past me and took second 🥈 place by 2 seconds. No free post race soup, but then again the race only cost £5. The notable detail regards entries, of which there were only 32, was that 16 were women.
