On paper, Scafell class is the longest with a 37.6km on day 1 and 22.5km on day 2. Unfortunately due to poor route choice in places we did 44.5km on day 1 and 25.3km on day 2. We did not escape the football however as it played out at midway camp with a comical lag between different groups of people watching/listening to the penalty shootout.

The race started ok, but my mate started to struggle early on. A brutal descent to get to easy running, at the expense of extra distance, and ascent, did not go down well with him. I thought we might have to drop out, but slowly we worked our way around and picked off all the checkpoints. I was surprised to see we actually finished the day 8th out of 12 teams. One team had retired.

Day 2 started off sunny and surprisingly my mate was actually rejuvenated after the midway camp in a tiny tent. I had forgotten how cramped the tent was, but on a positive it weighed less than a kilo. We ended up finishing 6th on day 2 which moved us up one place in the overall ranking. The Saunders is seen as a good introduction to mountain marathons; mainly as it is being compared to the Original Mountain Marathon (The OMM) which is run at the end of October in generally miserable conditions. Post race there was a meal and also a pop-up Pete Blands Sports shop. No bar unfortunately, but there was one at the halfway camp 😁

The race has grown a lot in popularity since its inception back in 2008. I was slightly late to the party, first completing it in 2011. It was falsely advertised as 105 miles back then, but GPS watches now show it's slightly shorter.

So at 18:00 on Friday I lined up this year in the middle of an 800 strong pack looking to set the record straight after failing to finish last year. My mate also promised me an overpriced pint if I just finished this time. My ego was tested!

I started out slowly, but quickly worked through the field and surprisingly found I was around top 10; then the wheels seemingly fell off! After little more than 30 miles I was the one everyone passed with ease. A few asked if I was ok as I plugged away. I kept time at check points down, and on a positive was eating fine; and feeling ok aside from being slow.

As the second day wore on, the rain came down, then sun came out. I started passing runners whose legs had fallen off metaphorically writing. I picked up a Liverpool buddy runner, who's unbelievably thinking of joining Mosley Hill, for the last 30 miles. I left him on the last climb because he said he's thinking of joining Mosley Hill! At the finish I got my overpriced pint.
