There was a 24 miler and 32 (50k). They all cost the same price. I went with the short to race Sean Richards, but in the end he never showed up as he thought the race was tomorrow. I use the word 'Race' loosely. The event is classed as a challenge. There are a few check points (2 for the short) along the route offering water refills and light refreshments. I did go out to try and go sub 2 hours; a purely psychological goal. I was left to it by the rest of the field who rambled around at their own respective speeds. Slightly heavier refreshments at the finish of quiche and rice pudding with optional beans or fruit salad on the side.

This was the first year for the race. It was based on a variation idea for the Moel y Gamelin fell race. The trails are a good introduction to running in the hills..it is essentially a very steep gravel road that snakes along the ridge line from the Ponderosa Cafe. It starts and finishes on grass, but is mostly limestone chippings, with some heather and traditional tarmac at the far end. It looks like it would also make a good training route. There was a GB ultra athlete doing reps along the ridge in preparation for the Tor des Geants. She clearly didn't read my piece on how a 5k plan is the basis for running 350km!

The current results do actually show Kam a few places behind Tony but I watched them cross the line together with my own two eyes.
The race itself was another good introduction to fell running like the Norman Conquest last weekend. There was a big issue early on however as I didn't start near enough to the front and was stuck in an early bottleneck at a bridge, then on a narrow climbing path. The race was started by a man wearing a turban who is planning to run to Dover, swim the channel, and then hike on to Nepal!!
I made it as high as 4th by halfway, but wasn't able to close on third place. I then lost two places on the peat bog section that didn't seem too bad to me, although Steve (twice) and Alice both went in past the knees. There was cake at the finish, at a cost, along with coffee. I got two cups as Alice inconsiderately knocked the first one over while I was busy eating the cake.

This year's race was very busy with both the North Wales championship, and the Wales inter regional championship, taking place alongside the Merseyside Fell Championship. The times at the front were fast, although there was suitable cartoonish controversy as the top three runners cut the corner on the way up and way down (the forth cut the corner on the way down). They saved nearly 400m, yet only got a 20 second penalty! I think it should have been a disqualification much like when I went the wrong way at The Beast earlier in the year; albeit by accident in my case. The poor Alf Tupper character in this saga was Oberon Kearney. He was upgraded to 4th only, even though he had followed the course properly. The Penny Lane cheering/singing squad were well positioned to see the cheating unfold, along with providing valuable support.
In the Merseyside Championship I was pipped at the last, by one second, by Chris Pownell. I thought I had him beaten after passing him near the summit of Moel Famau, but he made good use of the slightly less steep sections to close the gap. I did get the consolation prizes of first V35 and helping PLS to team gold. The women also won team gold against a strong Mersey Tri team featuring three runners who have all had Merseyside vests. Lenka was also second V35. Full Merseyside Fell Championship results will be published on the county website along with John Hunt's report on the day.
