The race started with rain that gradually turned to snow! The second day was forecast to be more rain but when it came we got dry ground and sunshine! My feet were a bit of a mess after I skipped a sock change at first life base around 50km. At the second life base I had trench foot, so slept 20 odd minutes to air feet and then put on dry socks and shoes. At the third life base I was inspired by Claire Bannwarth (French ultra running legend who had already done UTMB a week before and is known for back to back to back feats of endurance).

We worked through the late afternoon and next night to get to forth life base around 200km. I was so slow by end as so sleepy my balance felt off. I tried a power nap of around 20 minutes then did the 5th and 6th stages. The cold was now the minor problem (minor as just wear a coat). I caught Sabrina Verjee as she was having a short sleep at an intermediate check point. I then talked to her through the night as she struggled with sleep monsters! Oddly, even with my help, she needed another 10 minute sleep!!?

I took another 10 minute sleep at the end of stage 6. I'd semi cemented 8th place by this point with little hope of catching the 7th athlete (a German woman who went on to break female course record). I pushed the pace to build a big time buffer. I paid a minor price with blisters and I was fatigued by last few km so I jogged in at semi relaxed pace (it is still a race). The rain had started also.

King John's Castle Fell Race

First time for most of us, just under 6 miles with about 1000ft of elevation, EOD £5. The views were just glorious especially as the weather was warm and clear. Friendly low key fell race organised by Buckley Runners, starting at the Raven Inn Pub. The first mile was quite gentle comparing to traditional fell races that go straight up hill to get heart rates sky high in the first 5 mins. The rest of the run was over nice grassy hills albeit a killer climb at mile 3. Well marshalled and marked other than one corner at mile 4-5 which many of us nearly missed or missed. PLS did place well in men's and women's categories. Special well done to Mark Ewing for taking on another fell race as a new member of the club and Steve for coming straight from a holiday that morning. There was a raffle afterwards, Steve Dipple got a bottle of beer and I got a bottle of rose wine for the lady's race. Would definitely go back next year.
