The race was strongly recommended by David Ralphs of Newburgh Nomads; a club probably most well known in the local area for putting on the Harrock Hill race series through the summer. It passed the pound per mile metric, as entry cost £15, and included bread and soup post race. Tea, coffee and cake was available at the finish for a £1 charge each.

The actual race was semi marked, but having a map was mandatory. I used my map a few times as I lost sight of the runners ahead. The course was mostly on paths, albeit steep ones sometimes; but there was a horrendous bog early on to drain the power from the legs. Good weather helped make for a pleasurable day. A good option for an ORC race next year.

Really good weather for this race. Cold but dry and not windy. Still nearly lost our shoes on some sections! Great event, hot food at the end!

Winter Half Tour of Bradwell

Buoyed by last week's longish race in Yorkshire I tried a similar race in the Peak District. The Half Tour of Bradwell was not marked, but prescribed route wise. They had a few check points to verify compliance. It was a nice loop with little mud beyond what we find at XC. The disappointing element was that the race allowed staggered start times which caused flashbacks to COVID days! I at least had the winner 🏆 pass me. He did say, "Hello Mr Eccles;" I must be famous (ok I have met him before at other races). I attempted to follow his pace but was very very quickly dropped on the long climb out of Castleton by the famous Peak Cavern cave. Alas I got to the finish and took my complimentary bottle of beer, then looked at the results and saw the other racing snakes 🐍 had stared early and I was in 12th place. I had a complimentary soup to drown my sorrows and then went home. It was freezing 🥶

Sheeptracks Fell race

I did 28.78km with 1,478m ascent. Some people did manage nearer 26km. The race started well. I reached CP1 with Joel Gomes just in the lead. This was semi international as I didn't want him to follow me to CP2. I was pleased to see he didn't go the route I intended to. My cunning plan earned me a 2/3 min lead by CP2. As I climbed to CP2 I was pleasantly pleased not to see the yellow T-shirt of Joel approaching from above. I felt I had the race won 😅, although a long way to go yet. I just needed to not do anything stupid.

After CP3 I did something stupid. The location of CP4 was only released yesterday, so I had not taken the opportunity to do a reconnaissance trip to survey the landscape. Instead I did a parkrun in Widnes. My lack of dedication to winning came back to haunt me as my cautious route based on satellite photography from Google (I'm pondering putting in a claim) cost me most of my lead. I did reach CP6 hanging on to my lead by my fingernails, but by CP7 it was gone. The fight was then on.

I managed to keep ahead of most of the chasing pack, but two stubborn runners (some may say superior) stayed ahead. I did manage to recover second 🥈 place via a corner cut I eyed on the climb up, but alas my eyes missed the brambles that ripped my legs to shreds. I suppose a small price to pay in a race; they also say the scratches help stave off the cramps, which they did. Sadly they did not hold off the guy behind as he reclaimed second place.

The £8.50 got me a bottle of wine (for 3rd place), soup, tea and bread. Any profits left after renting the village hall in Cilcain went to the North Wales mountain rescue who also kindly provided the marshals out on the course for this damp, and exceedingly windy, day.

Huge headwinds and a newly tight ankle lost me a lot of time, but a mostly kind course, and a nice community-led event. Semi-nostalgic as I used to live East Yorkshire-way a long time ago.
I hope to be back.
