37 miles with about 4,500ft ascent
(The route taken between the 9 check points is optional; although do need to use open access land and public footpaths)

There was a strange grey cloud over the Hebden Bridge area when we arrived; I got a lift with Mersey Tri's Al Smithson. The wind was also very strong. I still went with a sun cap, but didn't bother with sun glasses, a decision I would later regret when the cloud cleared.

The ground was baked hard which made for fast running conditions; I was over 20 minutes faster than last year which was very muddy in places. The race has been going since 1983 it seems based on the trophy 🏆 I won. I had come second 🥈 the past three years to the same man, so it was good to finally beat him.

The course changes every two years, so next year's race will likely be more hilly. I was arriving at check points before they had setup and having to pour water from a 20 litre bottle. Post race at the cricket club there was a reasonably priced bar 🍻 and free jacket potato along with free non alcoholic drinks like tea and coffee; and all for £25! Admittedly the marathon and 16 mile race also cost £25.

The dry weather as of late promised fast times, and it didn't disappoint! I started well leading up the first hill, but I was passed by a 19 year old novice and a woman with a fierce reputation for climbing hills fast. They both led the way with the young lad smashing the decent to open up a big lead. I managed to catch the woman, just, using the cunning that comes with having done the race 12 or 13 times (I cut a few corners). On the next climb she just kept running, so I dropped back; and that's clearly where I stayed. She went on to win the race outright and set a overall course record (although course is only 3 years old).

My race fell apart due to my ingenious nutrition strategy not working. It was like my digestive system went on strike! I felt too sick to eat much after 30 miles, and even water was hard. I resorted to hot water and 3 gels. The last gel didn't sit right and came back up a while later. I was near the end (7 miles to go) so decided to just plod on rather than attempting to eat again. I was going to drop out earlier, but somehow the hot water give me enough motivation to go on to try the last 15 miles. It was good to be part of an historical race.
