The Old County Tops
Roughly 35 miles with 11,000ft ascent!

The Old County Tops is a Lakeland fell classic that has been going a long time. It takes in the summits of Helvellyn, Scafell and Coniston; in that order. This year was hot and dry. There was a cool breeze on the summits.
The race didn't go to plan. First Rory struggled, hitting a heart of 170 which would be more at home in a half marathon! Then he got cramp on Scafell. He finally started improving on Coniston, but then I got sick. I threw up, which then made Rory feel sick! I ran in on fumes. Coincidentally we finished 13th and had been allocated race number 13. I timed it as 08:04:01 which adds up to 13!!
There was lots of food and soup post race, but as I could eat I went to the pub and got a pint (after queuing for a very long time; they don't seem setup to capitalise on lots of customers). Coca-Cola from a garage helped further settle the stomach. I'll probably do the race again next year to try and rediscover the form of years gone by (and hopefully it will be raining 🌧️)

On a day that would have been better known as the Furnace of Famau, temperatures were exceedingly hot before we had even started. There was little or no shade on the course and very little breeze. Some striders did the marathon and some did the half. The water stations were a welcome relief, although I heard the far water station began to dry up towards the end of the race. Someone had also removed a left arrow on the very far hill, although, as gps was allowed on this race it wasn't too much of a problem. The race was long and the start and finish was in a donkey sanctuary, the donkeys were a welcome sight at the end of the race and so was the cold beer handed to me by Lenka.
Former Strider Alice Fraser was 1st Female overall. Lenka was 3rd Female and 1st F40.
Alice got a mug for winning the race, I am not sure if Lenka got a prize.
