PLS 10k Race - Volunteers & Members Allowed to Run

We are pleased to report that the PLS full Committee has approved our proposal which may allow some PLS members to run our own race which is being held on Sunday 24 June.
In drawing up the proposal we have tried to balance the interests on the one hand of the Club and in particular the Race Cttee in ensuring that the integrity of the Race is not prejudicially affected, and on the other hand of individual members who are interested in running the Race.
The scheme is as follows:
To qualify for the ballot for places members must have committed in advance to help in the previous year's race (and actually turned up on the day)and must before 6.00pm on Wednesday 30 May commit to helping at this years race. If at that stage we have more than 90 people who have committed to help this year then we can allow the "excess" number to enter the race. Those allowed to run will be selected by ballot from those who, when they committed to helping, indicated they would wish to run. The ballot will be held on Thursday 31 May at club night at 6.45pm prompt. Those successful in the ballot will of course be required to submit their entry form and fee in the usual way. Entries are not transferable, but the Race Cttee may hold a further ballot to fill any vacancies that occur. After 30 May no more entries from members will be allowed even if after that date further members indicate a commitment to help. If by 6.00pm on 30 May we do not have 90 members who have committed to helping this year then no PLS members will be allowed to enter the race, and of course no ballot will be necessary.
So volunteers to help at this years race are now invited to put forward their name, contact phone number, confirmation of helping last year (we have lists so fraud will be detected!)and indication whether you wish to be considered to run this year. Register by email to the Race secretary (Michelle Cobourn - meescho@hotmail.com), or in person at club night to either Kris Cargill, Michelle Cobourn or Tim Warn. Don't forgot to qualify for any ballot you must register by 30 May.

Re: PLS 10k Race - Volunteers & Members Allowed to Run

I'd like to confirm that I have put my name forward as a volunteer and DO NOT wish to be entered into the ballot.

However, if I did want to be in the ballot I would be ineligible as I was not a member of the Club last year.

The logic of the Committee's decision is clear but it does appear to discriminate against anyone who has joined the Club since last year's race. I guess this falls under the heading of 'you can't please all of the people all of the time'...

Re: PLS 10k Race - Volunteers & Members Allowed to Run

I'll help out too. I'd love to run 5k but right now couldn't run a bath!

Re: PLS 10k Race - Volunteers & Members Allowed to Run

Hi Grae,

I take on board your comments but the whole idea is to reward members who have committed to ensuring the success of the race in the past. A lot of members have no idea how much work goes into organising the race and if we do not have committment from members the race cannot go ahead. We have only been able to allow members to run this year as the club is bigger than it used to be. Some have been working at the race for 14 years.
Stick with us and your turn will come!!!
I see that you are interested in joining the committee, come and have a word if you are interested in joining the race committee. More hands make light work.

Can I also thank Tim for all his hard work in this matter. He has to take the credit for organising this.

Ps I've only put my title on as so few people know who I am. ( The slow fat redhead at the back!!)

"A lot of members have no idea how much work goes into organising the race" - what evidence do you base that on? That assertion could be taken as quite patronising.

Personally, I believe most people do appreciate the work which is involved, and are grateful to those who give of their own time to make the race a success.

Re: PLS 10k Race - Volunteers & Members Allowed to Run

Does this system not raise the question of whether or not times achieved by club members who run in our own race are allowed to count in the Club Championship also????

Re: PLS 10k Race - Volunteers & Members Allowed to Run

I'm in the "If it ain't broke don't fix it!" camp.I feel that the "No PLS members allowed to race" rule is one of the things that makes this race special and thought that a decision as important as this would have been more widely discussed with the membership or at the AGM. I've heard it said before that if any member is unhappy with the rules, constitution or the way the club is run they should make their feelings known at the AGM.

It appears to me that an important club rule that has been in place for many years has been discussed and amended by the relevant committees due to a discussion on the forum involving just a handful of members. Does this set a precedent? How do we raise issues in future? Put it in writing to the committee? Raise it at the AGM? Or just pop it on the forum?

Rant over! Keep up the good work everyone! As Nige says,it's much appreciated by the majority.

I'd like to put my name forward as a volunteer for this one. Although, I think it is definately the correct decision to allow PLS members to compete as it would be silly to thwart your greatest revenue stream! Money for the club or 250 volunteers, its a no brainer!

Well said that man

Re: PLS 10k Race - Volunteers & Members Allowed to Run

For clarification, no club rules have been "amended" by full committee or race committee. The Constitution as adopted by the Club at an EGM a couple of years ago provides that no members shall run the PLS race except in accordance with a scheme proposed by the race committee and approved by the full committee. It was then that the previous blanket prohibition on members running the race was amended. So if members wanted to keep the old rule they should have attended the EGM and voted against the new Constitution.
The scheme which has now been published was proposed by the race cttee and approved by the full cttee thus it has been adopted entirely in accordance with the club constitution. Don't shoot the race cttee we are just trying to keep everybody happy!

Re: PLS 10k Race - Volunteers & Members Allowed to Run

The opportunity to enter the ballot to run the PLS 10K has now closed.

We currently have 58 volunteers which means that there will be no ballot and no PLS runners this year under the scheme approved by the full committee.

Thank you to the 58 who have volunteered so far, we appreciate your support. If you haven't and would like to, please let myself, Tim Warn or another committee member know.
