Club Records Query

Would we allow track times in the club records?

I might be running a track 10k on Wednesday (Bebington Oval 19:30 if anyone fancies running 25 laps!) and will probably be running a track 5k later in the year and was wondering if I got a top 5 result, would we'd consider it a genuine club record?

There are obvious advantages, 100% accurate, track is more responsive than road, you can wear spikes etc.

*stands back and waits for Nige to explode

Re: Club Records Query

Why not expand the records categories to track as well and have records for these races, too. May encourage a few more members to try it out.

Seems unfair to mix them up into the road results. You're bound to get a better time on a track for 5 or 10Km, surely.

Re: Club Records Query

Fellow Striders, young and old, men and women - I would ask you to rise up as one to bring the full force of our great club to bear and thereupon to seize the moral high ground and make his charlatan (for he is no better) aware in the most unequivocal voice that : ENOUGH IS ENOUGH !

If we sit meekly by and allow this to go through, it will - believe me people - simply be the thin end of the wedge. Before we know it he'll be telling us it's exactly 2.5km from his house to the Asda and that a trip to get the shopping in should count as a 5k.

Contrary to what this member (soon to be ex-member if I can find out who is on the committee nowadays) thinks, I am not exploding; however I do find myself unable to prevent my head shaking from side to side in disbelief while I am writing this, just staggered at the lengths some people will go to in order to achieve their 15 minutes of fame.

Re: Club Records Query

Actually, you know what, I really can't see why a track 10000m shouldn't count.

However beating your 10k road time on the track is actually not as easy as sounds Mr C.

Prove me wrong!!

Re: Club Records Query

Great post Nige
especially the asda quip
love it

Re: Club Records Query

Nige that made me smile. Seriously though, are you really saying 10k is more difficult on the track than on the road? I've never done anything like that distance on a track but for some reason I thought up that point the track might be a good advantage over the road.

It's even, you get equal distribution of wind pressure/assistance etc.

OK it robs you of the will to live after a while but surely not in such a short a space of time.

I am intrigued. Who's done 5 and 10ks on the track here? How do they compare to road racing then?

Re: Club Records Query

I think you have hit the nail on the head Cristina. I think a 5k track time is more likely to be quicker than the same distance on the road because you aren't on the track for so long.

On the other hand, as you say, the sheer repetitiveness of 25 laps on the track can drain you of the will to live and works against going quicker over 10k on there compared the road. The chances of being lapped are also greater and that can knock your spirit too.

Not that being lapped is a problem that Martin will have to deal with with on Wednesday!

Re: Club Records Query

I'm with John on this, I'd just add a little detail..

I'd include the results and in bracket that they were achieved on track, so people can make their own mind up about it...

same should go with trail and fell racing, altought they rarely come in classic distances and normally way too steep to get a good time!

Re: Club Records Query

Love it folks - good points raised all round. Simo sort of agree with you. Perhpas we should have a track section now in the records?

Re: Club Records Query

Nige, as long as you choose the racing line, it's 5.162 miles there and back to the asda from mine, according to power of 10, I'm 3rd V40 on the all time list for that distance

Maybe have a middle/long distance track section for fun but I don't think we should be handing out trophies for it

anyway I'm not doing it now, it's too hot for Ewoks

Re: Club Records Query

I'm all for this asda race Nige...I do all my best times when there is food at the finish line!

JC - if we start putting the track records on the website you'll be down at stretford every two weeks doing the 100m,200, 400, 800, 1500 and 3k.....Javelin if you could! You're right Nige he's a glory hunter, no idea why he supports Liverpool though!
