I was a bit slower than last year and the weather was not as nice. It was raining and windy. I made the classic mistake of keeping my coat on as I only had a vest as the alternative. I was warm after a few hundred metres of racing. I did lead for a short while as the top three carried straight on. I foolishly called them back robbing myself of a prize.

A pleasant, warm summer's evening in the beautiful Cuerden Valley Country Park was the setting for the final "Badger" Trail Race of the summer and the racing conditions were absolutely ideal. Congratulations to Mike for winning his age category. If you have never ran "The Badger" before, I strongly recommend you put it in your "must" run diary for next year !

Where do I begin, firstly Lyndsey Shapre, Jess Judd and Alison Leonard were at the G.P. doing the 800 with the blokes in the open race. Sharpe ran a world class 1:59 to beat my training homeboy Gav McBride into 2nd, no shame in getting beat by a girl matey

Unbelievable to see these world class athletes up close, I'm doing my 3k race and here's World Championship bound Lyndsey Sharpe warming up on the back straight, a buzz for a athletics groupie like myself.


Oh yeah I was 0.81 seconds off a pb! Dug deeper than the Mariana trench for this tonight and I'm over the moon to run so quick. Two years ago I ran 9:43:00 so to get so close is massive for me.

Got in the quicker B race in the hope of getting dragged around but ended up in no mans land after two laps and ran the rest solo. Paced really well but just couldn't find the extra gear with 800 left, splits 3.15, 3.16, 3.12.80

I've been busting my **** off in training for this race tonight and Capenhurst next week, the Swenssonator's gonna waltz away with the V40 5K club record but I'm going run close to 16:30 next week, I can feel it!

Great job, sounds like a phenominal experience that only the likes of me can dream about... Go and smash Capenhurst next week John.

I can't believe nobody have yet noticed the Swenssonator missing from the mystery results

He was winning by a a mile (quite literally) from where I was standing/running

Other eagle eyed spectators may also have noticed I didn't have a race number on during the race. I was one of the few unlucky runners to arrive just after 7pm and the race was already full so couldn't enter. It was a bit unfortunate but it's understandable that they have to draw the line somewhere. The guys at the Harriers were happy for us to run as 'guests' though.

It was such a nice evening for running and I was in my club kit so I thought I may as well line up at the start and run the race, but I had to avoid the finish funnel at the end and didn't get a time in the results.

Still a very enjoyable way to spend a warm summer evening. Superb turn out from the club again, plenty of PBs always good to see, and great support round the course!!

Mine was a PB, Andy. Jane Nicholson ran. She was one of the last to get numbers, but she's not on the results.

We all got a prize, except Tony. I was 3rd 'Male Open', or for Simone, '3rd Male under 40'. Gill won the V50 prize and Cristina actually did come 3rd Lady.

The weather was ideal for running with the top 4 men beating the old course record. The race was marked so no need for a map and compass.

Weather wise it was a rotten night at Capenhurst which is a real shame because the course in my opinion is super quick.

The wind and rain seemed to take it's toll with times slower than expected across the board. There was still some great times and if you got a PB last night well done.

Not relevant but a funny stat from last night, of all the lads and lasses I train with the first three seniors combined time was the exaclty the same as the first three vets combined time, weird eh?

Only a couple seconds diff but only takes 1 for a PB and looking at last nights Capenhursts results and the chip times for John Chris and myself have been changed to as follows.

Birchwood 10k, my result was 55-21, it appears I paid twice but some other "Terry Long" got my second number!! This is gonna take some sorting out!!!

Trafford Grand Prix 3000m 25th August

Great end to the summers track season for me, no PB (again!) but it was a fine run if I say so myself. Miserable conditions for a change at Stretford, wet and windy plus a few problems on the motorway meant only an A and B race for the 3k and both had less than usual. I managed to get off to a good start, 3:14, 6:31 but dropped the group after 2k and struggled to maintain the 78 second laps for the final km and finished with my 3rd quickest and also third slowest time of the season 9:50:55.
My tongue is firmly in my cheek when I write these reports but if you fancy a bit of track racing I seriously recommend you give the Grand Prix’s a go. The atmosphere is brilliant no matter what race you’re in and if you love your athletics this is fantastic grass roots running at its best. Plus they’re all shown on Vinco’s website so you can have a good laugh at how slow and daft you look :0)

Obviously the track is not for everyone but the standard isn’t world class, I started doing these before I joined Penny Lane and used to run 11 mins for the 3k. Have a look on Power of 10 at the results, there are plenty of site like Jack Daniels vdot and MacMillan that crunch the numbers to what you might do for 3k/15000/800 based on your road times. If you think you’d fit into the Grand Prix, give it a go.

This was a late substitute for Race The Train because I fancied something different. It'd be a gentle stroll for the likes of Lawrence Eccles but a proper fell race nonetheless. 2 main climbs the first long a gradual the second short & steep. Well marked course with some sections across open bog & a river crossing. Scenery varied from stunning to bleak!

A word of warning this is attached/part of 'The Lowther Show' which is a country gents sort of thing specialising, as it does, in Barbour Jackets, Chelsea Tractors and Fox Hunting and not the sort of thing any card-carrying scouser should be caught up in :-0

Speaking of Lawrence Eccles - currently engaged in the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc - Sur les Traces des Ducs du Savoie race.

Positive height gain : around 7,250m

A most enjoyable, friendly, low key race. A very fast, flat course & fabulous ideal racing conditions... really enjoyed it ! Definitely do it again...but the next two races on a Sunday morning so will probably have to wait until next year to run again in the evening.

It's a great race, short enough to make it approachable for anyone and difficult enough to keep you out of mischief. There's also a fair in the village so you can bring non-running family and they won't get bored.
