It was the second running of this race organised by Spectrum Striders, which replaces the old Lymm 5k road race.
Hardly a race through the last untamed wilderness - I don't think we were ever more than a stone's throw from the Asda - but still an interesting one lap course on footpaths and trails through woods.

The Highlander Mountain Marathon involved about 20 miles each day navigating between check points in the Scottish hills south west of Inverness. As it was the last time for the event I won't bother recommending it for next year.

Position unknown, as results are not out anywhere yet, apart from the wall of the convent where it finished and I didn't think of taking a picture of it, silly me ;D
Point to point race, between two convents of monks, hence the name of the race, who were out in force to dish out food and drinks at the start and finish lines.
Won't even mention the amount of uphill I ran cos I lost count, although I definitely remember running uphill non-stop between 15 and 19km, which made the last 2km slightly descending a gift from heaven, maybe that's why the monks were around ;D
Father won a whole Parma ham as 1st MV70, which made my bottle of white, bag of organic beans and technical t-shirt goody bag seemed like a slap in the face ;D
But hey oh, I have to start somewhere... my time will come... in 30yrs time ;D

It was a hot night, but not too bad. The course appeared to be a training route for Horwich as they dominated. I was surprised at the complete lack of markers. I just followed the Horwich guys ahead. I did make a few wrong turns and suspect I may have missed a few faster lines (corner cuts). The course was good with a fast finish.

I tried a new high caffeine gel before the race and regretted it for most of the race. The course was very muddy through the woods; reminiscent of cross country. As luck would have it I was one of the few competitors who expected such conditions. Quite a large number of people had road or trail shoes on, so just fell over a lot. I had fell shoes on and was fine.

Same for me, my time was 17:42 not 17:51(although I am more than happy with 17.51) I asked Arwel the race director and he reviewed the video footage and confirmed thats when I crossed the line!! (I didn't know they video recorded it!?).

I kept expecting the torrential rain to show up, but it did not. I started off ok, but then got passed by a load of people on the first downhill. They politely let me pass on the hill climb so I got 2nd place. I lost it again on another downhill, but regained it and was close to 1st; then we did the final descent to the finish and he put 30 seconds on me.

Nice and dry conditions, minor extra challenge this time were the cows in one field, who went mad when the marshal tried to scare them away, producing the opposite effect!
Some runners got charged and had to make a slight detour...
And I thought the word coward came from cows.. I stand corrected ;D

The distance and height climbed would have been tough, without the unwelcome addition of 30deg heat in the shade. It felt very hot in the sun, especially on the climb to the Emmosson dam. I lost appetite for food and struggled drinking just plain water. Resorted to drinking little and pouring water on my head. I could see I was not alone in not liking the heat. There was a high drop out rate. The course is nice; I suspect more enjoyable done in smaller sections rather than one go, but there is a strange satisfaction in doing it in one go even though it left me feeling rough for hours post race.
