David, I enjoyed your site. Brought back a lot of memories of growing up as a country boy in Alabama.
I arrived in Dian,RVN in early July 1966 and was assigned to HHC 1st Eng Bn. Although my mos was a const. surveyor I had a vast variety of experiences while OVER there.
One of my good friends, even today, went over to RVN with the Div in 1965.He was extended 3 more months and returned in Oct 1966.We have visited each other in our hometowns and chat once monthly.I retired in 2006 from the USPS and have enjoyed retirement.
Discovered in 2002 that I had prostate cancer and had 41 treatments of radiation in 2003 and everthing was fine until 2007 when my psa began rising very fast.I will be going on lupron shots in Mar 2008.
Thanks again. maybe one day our paths will cross and we can sit down and talk awhile.May one day visit again another Vietnam vet. from Pa.

ps. Have had a wonderful life,Same wife of 39 years 3 children and 6 grandchildren. Got right with God in 1973,best thing to have happen to me

I, like you, entered the service with the same "greetings". Put on one more year before taking the oath. Spent my time at Ft. Jackson, SC, then went to the "Big Red One" thru Di An. Was with the 1/18th SWAMP RATS, from Jan. '66 to Jan. '67. Reading your accounts of the daily life, it sure brought back some memories, some good, some bad.....Very well written. Welcome Home Brother.....

I have just completed your book, a gift from my daughter. It is a most enjoyable book, and you should take great pride in it. You capture our heritage and our humanness from crowning glory to warts. We live in a great corner of this world. Those of us, the senior generation, have been protected not by terrain but by culture, small enough to know and be known.

Dear Mr. Thompson,

We really enjoyed meeting you and your wife. My husband is reading your book now and he is really enjoying it. We will be taking it to my mom this weekend. I know she will love it. I guess I will be last to get to read it. I'm sending you some pictures. I made extra and put a copy in the book for my mother. Thanks, and we hope you sell many more books.

I am the friend of Cass Hutchinson who purchased your book at your signing at Tamarack. Sometimes it was a river of tears while reading your book. So many of the references of your mother, which I could feel, there was such a bond of love that you shared, were so similar to mine. I was born in a small town of Lost Creek (well really in an area 2 miles south called Rockford) in WV. I was also the youngest of 6 children (3 boys-3 girls) who was raised on a farm. The farm was big enough to support our family. We all worked hard, especially my parents. It was a rich life with many life experiences, but financially very meager. My father died at the age of 95 and my mother lived to be 94. Neither had been in a hospital till they were 90. Who says that hard work, good food, lots of love and the help of the Lord is the best recipe of life. Thanks for sharing your memories and stimulating mine.
