Brazilian VW Enigine Codes

I am trying to restore a 1981 GTI. The engine code is SPBA257848. Can anyone tell me what engine type this is or if the letters/numbers in the code mean anything?
Thanks,
Andrew

Re: Brazilian VW Enigine Codes

This is a water cooled engine? If so, check out the site VW Vortex and maybe someone can help.
Best regards,
Jim

Re: Brazilian VW Enigine Codes

It is an air cooled engine with a single Solex carb.
Thanks,
Andrew

Re: Brazilian VW Enigine Codes

That number does not match any VW engine code listed on the www.thesamba site. Can you post a picture?
Best regards,
Jim

Re: Brazilian VW Enigine Codes

The number appears just ahead of the oil cooler tower very near the flange for the transmission on the motor (drivers side). The normal VW part number which is typically located where the alternator tower attaches, is not there. I do have some photos and will try to get them posted (or a link posted) once I figure out how to do that.

Here is some other info on the car:
Body #16913
Chasis #SP10212787

Thanks,
Andrew
