Our Charlie Chan Film Tour, 2019, begins with "Behind That Curtain"

FROM CHARLIE CHAN: “Begin at best place - beginning.”

OUR “NEW” CHAT ROOM: Our NEW Chat Room can be accessed the same way that we accessed our previous version. Just go to our “Chat Room” link at charliechan.info, or use this direct link: http://www.charliechan.info/id17.html

The “new” Chat Room is not as “fun” as our old, Parachat room, but it should be functional as far as the “basics” are concerned. Sadly, no sounds are available, and I still have not figured out other details, yet. So, to paraphrase, “The show will go on!” Parachat’s replacement, RumbleTalk, has a pretty good replacement, and it’s PRIVATE! The main drawback is that at a reasonable yearly price, the room offered will accommodate no more than 15 Participants at one time. Perhaps we can discuss this at this week’s Chat session.

THIS WEEK: We begin our Charlie Chan Film Tour of 2019 with a viewing of “Behind That Curtain” with E.L. Park as Charlie Chan, appearing at the end of the picture. This film gives us a look at, I believe, the earliest appearance of Boris Karloff in a talking picture.

OUR PRESENTATIONS: “Behind That Curtain” (1929; 91 minutes) AND we have as our “extra” presentation, the first chapter of the 1943 movie serial, "The Adventures of Smilin’ Jack" (1943; 25 minutes), which features our Number One Son, Keye Luke in varying episodes!

FILM SUMMARY: Eve Mannering, daughter of a wealthy Englishman, marries Eric Durand, a fortune hunter, who kills the investigator hired by Eve's father to examine his past. Upon discovering the plot, Eve leaves him and joins an old family friend on a desert expedition from India to Persia. Later, fearing that she will implicate him in her affairs, Eve deserts him and travels to San Francisco.

FILM NOTES: The novel “Behind That Curtain,” by Earl Derr Biggers, was originally published serially in ‘he Saturday Evening Post’ between March 31 and May 5, 1928. “Behind That Curtain,” a film in which Charlie Chan appears only at the climactic moments at the close of the picture, was later remade as “Charlie Chan's Chance” (1932).

TIME: We begin with arrivals and greetings at 7:30 EASTERN TIME. Then, we share our “extra” presentation which will be followed at exactly 8:15 when we roll our feature for our Monday evening, “Behind That Curtain.”

LOCATION: Our Charlie Chan Family Chat Room, which is accessed at http://www.charliechan.info/id17.html.

IF YOU LACK A COPY OF OUR FILM: Often our features can be found online. Happily, “Behind That Curtain” IS available online, as is our “extra.” Please use the link provided at our Chat Room. We have also provided links there to our “extras.”

OUR MONTHLY POLL: Please take a moment to cast your last-minute vote in our January 2019 Poll, located at our Entrance Page (http://www.charliechan.info/index.html)!

NEXT WEEK: Please join us on Monday, January 14 as we continue our Charlie Chan Film Tour for 2019 with “Eran Trece” (1931), the Spanish language version of the LOST initial film in the Charlie Chan Fox series “Charlie Chan Carries On.”

SO, PLEASE JOIN US as we begin our 2019 tour through the entire Charlie Chan film series…and more…with “Behind That Curtain.”

Sincerely,

Rush Glick
