OUR CCF MONDAY EVENING CHAT AND FILM VIEWING FOR January 11: “Eran Trece”

FROM CHARLIE CHAN: “Man seldom scratches where he does not itch.”

GREETINGS! This week we will be sharing the closest thing we have today as an example of the currently “lost” Charlie Chan movie, the FIRST in the series, proper, “Eran Trece” (“There Were Thirteen”), with Manuel Arbo as Charlie Chan. This was the Spanish language version of “Charlie Chan Carries On,” which follows, quite closely, the original picture which starred warner Oland in his initial appearance as Charlie Chan.

OUR CHAT ROOM: Our Chat Room can be accessed the same way that we accessed by going to our “Chat Room” link at charliechan.info, or use this direct link: http://www.charliechan.info/id17.html

THIS WEEK’S PRESENTATION: “Eran Trece” (1931; 79 minutes); along with our “extra,” a Charlie Chan radio mystery, “The Baffling Murder of Col. Willoughby” (Part 2). (15 minutes).

FEATURE INTRODUCTION: Inspector Duff of Scotland Yard receives a call about the murder of the wealthy Louis Potter, who was strangled with a suitcase strap while on an around-the-world tour with a party of other Americans. Dr. Lofton, the tour conductor, discovers that the strap came from his bag. Duff interrogates Walter Decker, a theatrical manager occupying the room next to Potter's, who hopes to meet his estranged wife, actress Sybil Conway, at San Remo and persuade her to join him on the trip. Duff then realizes that he cannot hold the twelve remaining tourists because he has no motive or evidence.

FEATURE NOTES: “Eran Trece” was the Spanish language version of “Charlie Chan Carries On,” using Spanish-speaking actors and actresses in its cast, and following the original script, with minor changes. This was the only Spanish version of a film from the Charlie Chan series. Some sources erroneously include Luana Alaniz in the cast of “Eran Trece.” In his autobiography, L. B. Abbott notes that he assisted photographer Sidney Wagner on “Eran Trece.” “Eran Trece” was the only Spanish version in the Charlie Chan series.

TRIVIA: This is the only Spanish-language film in the entire original Chan series. There were no other foreign-language Charlie Chan films made by Hollywood after this one because, shortly after this movie came out, a method of putting sound on the actual film was developed, and so voice dubbing became more practical.
