The ground conditions were not very much like the XC I remember (the last times I was at Arrowe park it was exceedingly muddy). Yesterday it was about 18°C and the ground was relatively firm. The ground did get a bit muddy by lap 3. Also the rain showers and cold wind made it feel a lot less than 18°C. Fortunately it was not raining heavy for the race.

The weather was nice, although a little humid. We both finished before the rain came in. I did overshoot the first turn from CP1 assuming that maybe the wall for CP1 was further on. After a few metres I saw over the brow and realised I had indeed passed CP1 and backtracked. This meant I ended up leading the race by CP3 as the lead pack took longer to notice their error. Sadly the lead pack then caught up with me. Unfortunately, for them, they once again missed a more direct route to CP4 so I reached that second (sadly some of the slower lead pack runners spotted me veering off). By CP6, after a climb up through heather, I once again had the lead. This lead was short lived as my descending was poor and by the CP in the gully I was 7th. I did manage to climb back up to 5th by Moel Famau summit, but once again my descending speed let me down and I finished 7th. I discovered after the finish that the reason my right shoe felt lose was because the laces had snapped. I began to fear Nigel may have got lost as he did not show up for a while. I need not of feared as Nigel did show up. He had closely followed the unmarked route, then gone off route twice on the marked descent. In fairness to Nigel the marked descent was very economically marked. The race only cost £6 and came with free soup and cake at the finish; plus spot prizes. I won a bottle of beer and Nigel got a T-shirt.

First time for PLS at the fell relays and what an awesome day it turned out to be!
Deemed since the beginning as the hardest edition yet, especially navigation leg 3 was very challenging this year, with visibility next to none, even some top teams made huge mistakes, going back 70 places!
Both PLS teams were timed out but it doesn't take away the fact that they all performed outstandingly!

A race organised in typical Italian style! Stonking headwind throughout and a splish-splash through the acqua alta in the last 2K. Not the most scenic of routes, basically across the main bridge on to the island, around the docks then across a temporary bridge over the Grand Canal and along the southern shore. We were supposed to run through St Mark’s square but flooding put paid to that and the detour added another 500 meters to the distance. I wouldn’t run it again but great fun nonetheless. Love Italy!

This was a score orienteering event. I played it safe to ensure I finished inside 3 hours as after that I would have lost 40 points per minute over 3 hours; plus at my last race like this I lost all my points. It was surprisingly popular. Conditions were pretty much just clag, but navigation was easy as most of the checkpoints were close to a path. Also the ground is still quite dry.
