Calderdale Hike
36 miles officially although I did 37 miles again as per last year. It was a new route in places, with slightly less climbing overall.

Oddly I timed 05:54, but it seems they must have been late starting the watch. The course changes every few years, so it doesn't really matter. I was just pleased to get under 6 hours. Hopefully next time I can be a lot closer to the winner. The weather was near perfect. Ground conditions were not so good, but fortunately a lot of the course runs on well drained paths and tarmac, so I only got muddy wet feat every now and then.

The weather was near perfect and the ground not too muddy. I was feeling confident when I moved into second place. A few dodgy lines, and a bit of indigestion, later I had fallen to 5th. I was death marching to the finish. I wondered if I'd muster up more speed if challenged. On the last descent I was challenged and wasn't able to muster up a response so finished 6th.

On a positive Penny Lane Peglegs won the team prize again. Since I was the only Penny Lane Strider in the race I recruited Rory Harris (who finished second), Maria Cook of Skem fame (who finished second lady) and Ben Turner (husband of the far faster Sabrina Verjee who was unfortunately unavailable having just run 500km in Sicily).

Saddleworth cake race 29/04/2023

Despite the race making it into the off-road calendar, I was the only PLS member running this year. It was a beautiful day in Saddleworth, and it was great to finally compete in a race taking place in my homeland. I'd highly recommend this race to anyone who's new to off-road running as it's really well attended, clearly marked and marshalled, and super friendly! Entries were reduced if you brought a home-made cake and I was pleased to see that my raspberry and white chocolate effort was gobbled up quickly. The winning cake was a chocolate woodland scene, complete with marshmallow mushrooms - delish!
