A much bigger Penny Lane turn out at the race/challenge. The weather started warm, and cooled off in the afternoon, with rain very late on. The ground was mostly dry and the nettles not as tall as last year. My race started well, but through the fields the lead group remained at four runners. On reaching Duckington, the start of the September A race, not much had changed. It was at the second CP I took the lead, but this was short lived and I soon ended up third by the third CP. It was then back to the fields after Beeston Castle for the run to Rock farm. Here my race descended to a very slow pace. Soon after Rock farm, on the new half mile diversion just before Delamere Forest, I fell to forth place. Running through Delamere I realised my feet and lover legs were starting to betray my goal of running to the finish under 5 hours. Just before the last CP I was passed by two runners. It was clear now I was not going to break 5 hours; I was going to pretty much walk to the finish. I met the British Orienteering champion, who I sometimes train with, who tried to motivate me to run by highlighting that there were two people just ahead. I was well aware they were there as they had just passed me. I turned my cap backwards to avoid hitting my head on low tree branches, but managed to hit one anyway. At the finish it was suddenly all ok, after getting changed. The tea and sandwiches provided great re-energisation while I waited for the rest of the Penny Lane Striders to finish. Unfortunately I missed Tony and Cristina; and Julien got lost in Frodsham!

Harrock Hill Race (1/4), Bispham, Parbold, Lancashire

I meant to post these results in May but I forgot, this was the first of 4 of the Harrock hill races which are all ran over the same course £4 for a race or £12 for the series.

It was a record turn out for the race so the start was slightly delayed while they were sorting the numbers out. Conditions were good, very dry underfoot making some fast race times, the weather was warm with only a slight breeze. Prizes are in the form of a veg box, however none of us won a prize so we didn’t go home with a carrot.
