When we met at Garston the temperature in the car said 21 but by the time we got to Horwich this had dropped to 18, some flags were blowing in the wind which gave a good indication there would be a cooling breeze on the top.

We set off slightly earlier than planned as we’d heard Pink was playing at the Bolton stadium and there could be delays. We got caught in some concert traffic and had a game of guess the age of Pink, some guesses were wildly out, turns out she’s 43, anyway the veteran singer didn’t cause us to much of a delay and we arrived with plenty of time.

The race is sponsored by Walsh, there used to be a Walsh van selling trainers but there wasn’t this year, and I didn’t see anyone wearing Walsh shoes so not sure why.

Alice Fraser was 3rd Woman and Lenka 1st FV40, prizes here were booze, wine for the individual prizes and the women (Alice, Lenka and Sarah) won the women’s team prize and were presented with a box of Stella, which was kindly shared out with the prizeless men.

The hot hot night did not inspire confidence that I'd be able to win, but it did cool slightly by the 19:30 start time. I set off from the front row and people politely queued up behind me not noticing I was running slightly slower than normal due to a sprained ankle. It was all going well until the second descent where I lost the marked route and found myself in waist high bracken. I spotted the tree we needed to aim for at the bottom and took a direct line to it, arriving at the same time as the new leader who'd managed to go the right way. I then broke him on the second hill climb. I expected to be caught on the last mile down hill, but I was not. Kate MacFarlane, who was once Penny Lane, finished first lady.

Back in 2009, this was the first fell race I thought I'd done well at. I'd cramped up on the last descent mind, so there was room for improvement with my experience gained over years.

I lined up near the front, but was quickly going backwards (being overtaken) until I eventually found my place. The race was new back in 2009, but now the fast route had evolved. My old long line to the first summit was now the way everyone was going, so I took the shorter line that they had all forsaken. It didn't make much difference.

Downhills I was left behind, but I'd catch up on the uphills. This was how the race went. The new direct line through the crags was interesting. This was previously seen as a terrible idea, but now was a way to save two minutes. I managed the last super steep descent on grass without being crippled by cramp. I began to think I was gaining on the men ahead when a women floated past and would have beaten me but for the small sting in the tail where she cramped up and I took the opportunity to pass.

A really good race (4 in the series) hosted by Sale Harriers. Starting and finishing on a track with a very flat 2 laps through Wythenshawe Park on good paths. Normally a very fast course but not so in the heat last night (at least not for me). Well worth considering for any Striders wanting a change of scene and only £8 entry.

A sunny evening race for £2. It is part of the Clwydian Blasts series of races. No prizes. Just a bit of fun with positions recorded. Not even timed like a parkrun. It also doubles as an introduction to fell running for children. They run an even shorter course than the adults. Ice pops and water at the finish. There's another next Wednesday

High humidity and sunshine made for a warm race. Fortunately there was a cool breeze blowing around the Ponderosa café area. The tractors were out along with the motorcycles. It seems a popular spot.

On to the fell race and a small field of around 50 paid their £5 to run in the hills. The route is pretty much an out and back with a loop at the far end. Prizes at the finish are random, and this year ranged from wine gums to paint brushes. The prize for winning was a landscape picture drawn by the race organiser. The rain also held off which was nice 👍

Robbie Webster's Wobbler results and report.

There was a great PLS turnout at Robbie Webster’s Wobbler, affectionately known as “The Wobbler”, a tough and technical (tree roots galore) off-road race, which is part of the PLS off-road championship. Conditions underfoot were much better than last year when torrential rain led up to the race. Some striders were running their first off-road race in the PLS vest, massive well done to you all, not an easy race to pick as your first and you did us proud! Massive thanks to PLS members and dogs who came down to support the runners, it was great to have you cheer us along. Special shout out to the PLS ladies who brought home the team prize for the first time and Sarah Jackson, who rather than use her well-earned TOM rest day to actually rest, decided to race instead!
