This year the race was being used for both British and English fell championships. I wasn't really competing in either of those championships this year, so started near the back of the race. I planned to work through the field...that was the plan that did not survive the first descent. On the first climb I was regretting my shoe choice. It was wet and muddy grass as we entered the clag. The first descent exposed my lack of grip. It became clear that the worn path was a dangerous place and the longer grass to the sides provided better grip and reduced the chance of falling over.

The race finishes with a nice long climb that suits me.. normally. I started well, but didn't pull back that many places. I wasn't looking forward to the last grassy descent. I did make it down without falling, and passed the legend that is Colin Donnelly (former Welsh 3,000s record holder (in 1988; there's a video on YouTube)). There was soup, ice cream and beer at the finish; although they did charge extra/donations for this.

The temperature was much cooler than last year. Low pressure had brought some unsettled showery conditions with a strong south westerly wind being a major factor in the race.

There was much discussion before the race which shoes to wear. I opted for a light trail not remembering any really steep descents from last year. I think everyone fell over at some point, but the light trails seemed the correct choice as there’s quite a lot of road at the end.

The course was fairly boggy in parts with a few additional water features from last year. The main water feature is crossing Lowther river, the river was pretty high this year so the organisers had strung a rope across. I opted to take the river crossing and it was waist deep. Some people took the bridge but there appeared to be no time advantage to either.
There is a really steep hill the end which is an unwelcome addition after 13 miles, some interesting battles were had here.

Afterwards we went the Punch Bowl pub for a meal which was nice, I decided to camp overnight and it rained all night which was not nice.

It was a cool, dry, night for a change. The course seemed as fast as ever, although I still think it would be even better if the whole course got re tarmacked. The stampede moved along until the last km when I could feel it pushing me on to the finish..with quite a few having the audacity to pass me in the last km to show that they had paced it better. Just a bottle of water at the finish; there's no T-shirt or medal for this one, just a high probability of a PB.

The race is always on Bank Holiday Monday as part of the Cilcain village show. They have lots of stalls and novelty acts like punch and Judy (the name may have changed), teddy bear parachute and tug of war to name a few. There was cheese and candyfloss. Unfortunately the pub ran out of burgers, but Terry was able to get two; I ate one of them. Penny Lane did ok on race prizes with Lenka coming second overall. I held on to the rolling series trophy for the three races (Clwydian Hills and Sheeptracks being the other two), so got to take the tree trunk trophy back to Liverpool from where it had come in the morning.
