The Old County Tops

It was good to return to the Old County Tops and have a good race, unlike last year where we both suffered at different times leading to a painful finish time just over 8 hours and unlucky 🐈⬛ 13th place.
2026 we started conservatively and unfortunately arrived at Helvellyn in 13th position 😬. We were able to gain 4 places on the way to Scafell Pike, but we did lose a place as Rory had a mini cramp attack on the way to Cockley Beck, before the final climb to Coniston Old Man. We didn't gain any places on the climb, but on the descent to the Three Shires Stone, at the top of Wrynose pass, we overtook three teams. A man told us that the team ahead was miles ahead, so we didn't need to kill ourselves to catch them; although he then pointed out the team about 30 seconds behind us and suggested that we get a move on! We held the team off although they did stay in sight. We got the added bonus of the V80 trophy (two runners over 40 with a combined age between 80 and 89).
Soup and tea etc at the finish to aid recovery. We didn't hang around long this year as after about half an hour it started raining

The weather was still warm 🥵 for the first few miles, but fortunately cooled off once the climbing properly started. The clear weather was supplemented with a nice breeze; and later some high cloud.
I last did the race in 2022; actually the only time I'd done it. I was keen to improve on my time by not making the same navigational mistakes. It was all going to plan until the last hill! I foolishly followed the two runners ahead and lost 2-3 minutes or so. It is a nice element in a way that sets fell racing apart from a standard trail race. I could have put manoeuvred the two runners ahead as I did think they had probably gone wrong; but I decided that they must know a new line that saves time 🤣
I wonder how long the £1 per mile races will last. They may be a dying breed. There was a questionnaire about whether I'd be willing to pay more for the GPS tracking that we trialed today. Obviously I said no 🙂↔️

I went out optimistically to get under 4 hours, the outward leg was harder than I thought as although there wasn't much elevation the running was very rocky and technical. Part of the course took in the Lowther Fell race route, where the Ultra runners were diverted on there first extra loop.
At Pooley Bridge the Ultra runners were then diverted on their second extra loop. I had managed to bank some time here, this time was then squandered on the return leg as my lack of recent hill training showed going up to Gowbarrow fell. Some sections were particularly grinding, a footpath management section had created a slalom course which was time consuming. The run back into Glenridding was neither up nor down and we had to navigate families with picnics going to Aria force waterfall.
Lenka was 3rd lady in the Ultra and George finished 16th. I got a ice cream in Glenridding, Stella also got an ice cream, Terry did not.
We didn't see Lenka and George due to them starting and finishing at different times, although I did see Lenka's car in the car park.

Numbers seemed slightly low on previous years, maybe due to a clash with the Supersonic series. The PLS turnout was pretty good, I think we were the second most represented club.
Speaking of numbers they were late, apparently Nifty got the date wrong so hadn't turned up. The numbers turned up about 7, and were distributed very efficiently so there was only a 15 min delay to the start.
Weather conditions were almost perfect, a slight cooling tail wind along the beach on the way out and dry underfoot. The Heswall dales provides some variation to the course, only to be followed by the Wirral way which seems as endless as the loop line in races. There was water at the end, but no juice and no mars bars.
