This year's race was very busy with both the North Wales championship, and the Wales inter regional championship, taking place alongside the Merseyside Fell Championship. The times at the front were fast, although there was suitable cartoonish controversy as the top three runners cut the corner on the way up and way down (the forth cut the corner on the way down). They saved nearly 400m, yet only got a 20 second penalty! I think it should have been a disqualification much like when I went the wrong way at The Beast earlier in the year; albeit by accident in my case. The poor Alf Tupper character in this saga was Oberon Kearney. He was upgraded to 4th only, even though he had followed the course properly. The Penny Lane cheering/singing squad were well positioned to see the cheating unfold, along with providing valuable support.

In the Merseyside Championship I was pipped at the last, by one second, by Chris Pownell. I thought I had him beaten after passing him near the summit of Moel Famau, but he made good use of the slightly less steep sections to close the gap. I did get the consolation prizes of first V35 and helping PLS to team gold. The women also won team gold against a strong Mersey Tri team featuring three runners who have all had Merseyside vests. Lenka was also second V35. Full Merseyside Fell Championship results will be published on the county website along with John Hunt's report on the day.
